even if they're not meant to, dose a normal cat do anything to muffle the sound? has anyone who dosen't have to have one taken theirs off and noticed a difference sound wise?

Catalytic converters do quite a bit to muffel sound actually.
Often they are used as a car's only exhaust (it is LOUD, but not quite deafening)
Tubi makes a clyndrical cross section cat that could be combined with a glasspack stule tube muffler into one unit. www.tubistyle.it
I will probally be using their catalyst, but with a F355 ferrari muffler, for my silver car (Northstar swap)
Best! Ben

Cats are there for the most part for one reason...emmisions. I hate 'em. I cut them off of my Fieros. I get a strait pipe (Autozone, around $3.99) to replace it..VERY easy job with a sawsaw (zawsaw..oh hell, you know what I mean), about 10 minutes total time. Stock pipes on either side of the cat are 2 inches..I get a 2 inch pipe, and add a 2-2 1/8 end pieces. 2 1/8 fits over the stock pipes (on either side of the cat), and either weld or clamp (usually clamp).I dont live within the city limits so I dont have to go through inspection. Makes it sound better to IMHO...gives it a good "growl"..not loud, but "throatier" (is that a word? )

Hey, Ben, what's so good about the F355 muffler? And where did you find one? I can't imagine $500 or so for a muffler, even if it does say Ferrari on it.
I know DKOV uses one, but does it really make that much of a better sound? I'm pretty sure it's an incredible performance part...

My muffler had to be small, I chose a Cherry bomb, It is actually welded to the outlet of the Cat. It sounded good for a while, but now the heat from the cat has caused the fiberglass to kind of blow through or wear away. My car continually gets louder. Last night I noticed its louder and backfires alittle more than it did before. So, I think if you had a Cat/muffler unit, It may not last so long due to the amount of heat created by the cat.

Blake, I muffled a cat once...not wait twice! Then the neighbor got suspicous and I had to leave her cats alone. heh heh
I got a free flowing Cat from West Coast I think( I can check if u want). it took a while to get here, it is smaller than the org. one by half the size. very nice and the muffler guy had no problem welding it in!
Taking off the cat will give you a good sound if you don't need it. Cadillacs do have a kind of Cat/muffler but when I tried to use it all by itself and modified the rest of the exhaust to 2 1/2 inch going straight to 2 single Megs pipes with resonators, it didn't work out very well at all.
It got really LOUD inside the cabin. A low "boom" resonance that would make my ears ring when I got home. True mufflers seem to take out or at least tune that low frequency resonance. The sound from the pipes was great but it would just be horrible inside.

wkd that is interesting about the interior noise. and odie that link is awesome! you can get more performance and lose the additional weight of the muffler. You also would have shorter pipes and a more straight flowing system! I LIKE IT!
