The top one you could leave open or connect to the skinny tube on the firewall with some vacuum hose (they used to be connected to the air filter on that line before the recall). The lower one is where the cruise control filter goes, it's just a piece of foam.

didn't mean to sound sarcastic. i've just been trying to figure it out for a couple of weeks now. kinda irritating to find out it was that simple. basically they don't do anything. oh well.

You might want to get the filter for the top one. I saw one for sale on Ebay. Its just a little piece of foam. It looks like a grey sponge, it keep the dirt and dust out of that piece.
