On my first Fiero, I took one of the two horns off and replaced it with one from an American pickup. The combination of a beep and a honk turned out to be an obnoxious, grating noise, but it worked to get peoples attention. Does anyone have any better ideas on how to make my horn louder and more annoying. I'm tired of the wimpy "excuse me beep" and want something more like "HEY SOB, GET OUT OF MY WAY" type of sound. I'll pass on installing a compressor and air horns though.

EDIT: sheesh.... no air horns.

Get a Air horn setup. The kinda thing truckers use. I got a cheap set at harbor freights (tool store). air compressor, hoses, and 2 dif freq horns for $20. Loud enough to really get attention now.

I have two horns off of a caddilac and they are loud and make a decent sound. I don't know what the notes are but they make me sound alot bigger than I am.

I got air horns from JC Whitney. They have a high and low tone that combined sounds very european and very loud. You can see the compressor in this picture, it is the Blue thing, the horns are right next to it.

The way to wire aux horns is in my cave. If your aux horn needs allot of power run them off a new heavy wire off the main terminal under C500.

Sound wise... There are not too many options.

If you use air horns, don't eliminate the factory ones. Just disconnect them. Air horns, especially cheap ones, tend to break down. The cheap electric ones tend to pop a diaphragm after awhile.

One thing you can do.... take one of those portable battery packs and go test horns a a salvage yard untill you find a set you like.

Factory horns mostly come in the meep meeep style or an electric trumpet but there are some variations in tone and volume.

Most aftermarket horns tend to suck quality wise.... You get what you pay for... good horns aren't cheap. They also tend to be hard to find. most places just carry cheap stuff.

I guess, I'll just get another full size Chevy pickup horn from the boneyard. Anything to make this Fiero sound bigger. Ogre is right, everything I've seen in the parts stores are cheap junk.

I've got an 87 Riviera that has horns on it that you can hear in the next county. I've been looking for one of these cars in the recycle yard for some time now cause I also think that the original horns on my Fiero do not get enough ATTENTION. Check around for a set of these. I guarantee that they will be noticed when you sound them. Guarantee void where prohibited by law, etc.,etc.,etc.

Oh yeah. That's what I want then. Thanks for the tip, Ed. But, I bet the pickup horns will be much easier to find.

Any big GM or other car/truck should have better horns. You can even use horns from other makes. They are all pretty much the same. I think most come from the same OE part supplier.

The loudest factory horns all seem to be the traditional electric trumpet style. The ones that look like snails on one side.

Hella makes some aftermarket Meep Meep style that should be good but I don't know of anyone that caries them. Hella makes some stuff OE for some of the Euopean companies. You might could find them on a wrecked BMW or something.

Part of the problem with OE Fiero horns is that most of them range from weak to shot after so many years. Allot of this is because they catch so mutch water in the location they are in. I'd bet allot of the 2 horn sets only have one that works.

I'm not sure who makes good air horns anymore. I haven't seen anything but the crappy $20-40 ones in so long. I won't waste my time with those any more.

Also.... you can reuse the OE fiero horn brackets... just take the bolt out of the middle of the horn or grind the head off as the case may be... makes the job much simpler.

When I get a chance, I'm probably going to yard surf some horns myself. I've got some aftermarket electric trumpets now. They sound ok but not right.... Too mellow. Probly because of the plastic trumpet on them.

Horns are interesting.... They are actually a mated set. The two notes in a dual set are chosen very carefully. If you have two horns the same note they don't seem a loud as the tuned pair does. I forget all the acoustics behind it but it works...

This means,
When you get more horns from the yard, get the matched set off the same vehicle. That will give you the loudest output.

Most horns from the States are tuned to F in twin sets the other one is usualy tuned to G this produces the attention getting dischord. Where is Songman? I am sure he could futher explain this.
If you could supply the air, the ULTIMATE horns would be a ship or marine horns. If you're in front of these and aren't expecting it "instant bowel movement"
I have had to alert unsuspecting sailboaters
who strayed into the shipping lane in front of the 136' ocean going tug I worked on.OH MY GAWED was often the look on the wide eyed shooken and pale face of the much smaller boats operator.Yes there are times when I would love to have those on my li'l Fiero.
Cheers, seadog

A friend of a friend is an 18-wheeler over-the-road trucker. He has a real freight train air horn mounted on his rig. It's almost enough to soil your britches.
