Hello,

I have an '85 GT (V6) Fiero, automatic, that has been wrecked. Engine & tranny are in excellent condition (less than 20k on rebuilt engine) and are still sitting in the car. I have found an '88 4 cylinder, 5 speed, that is in excellent shape with a blown engine. Seller only wants a couple hundred bucks for it.

Two questions:

1. Can I swap the engine, tranny, etc, from my GT into the 4 banger?

2. Better yet, can I swap my V6 into the 4 banger and retain the manual tranny?

I've swapped a V6 for a V6 before, which was relatively easy. I've no idea how easy it would be to switch engines alltogether. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? What sorts of problems will I run into, and can they be easily resolved?

I'm anxious to get another Fiero on the road. The easiest way would be to just find a nice GT with a blown engine, but I've yet to find one of those for a couple hundred bucks.

The 84s have some wiring issues. A V6 wasn't in the initial plan, so there will be some rewire work required. If the 86 cradle is good, you may be able to swap that into the 84. I'm not sure what all you would need to do to change the manual for the auto. It has been done.

Other years 4 cylinder Fiero do not have that problem.

Into an 88 four banger? You bet! I'd shoot off an email to Ed Parks and ask him about gothcas.

Yes, the V6 will bolt right up to the tranny in the 88 coupe. Although I'm not sure which clutch hardware you'll need to use (or maybe a mix of the two). Since you have a complete V6 with all the mounts, hoses, wiring, etc you shouldn't need to buy anything for the swap (except maybe for renting an engine hoist).

I have scanned copies of an article in the FOCOA magazine where they detailed the 4-cyl to V6 swap in an 84 Fiero. It's an excellent article. Since the 84 Fiero had some wiring differences and different cradle, you won't have to do any of the custom-fab stuff they mention. Here's a link to the pages of the article on my website: LINK

I have no idea where the 84 issue came from in this post!

You should have no problem swapping the 85 V-6 engine into the 88, just use the V-6 harness and computer from the 85 GT. You should use the clutch kit for the transmission so the splines match up.
Also you should try to locate the front engine mount for the 88 2.8 as the design is different and the engine may rock more than it should without it.

Thank you for the responses. I'm going to go have a look at this car tonight. If it's in as good of condition as he claims, I may just buy it and have another project on my hands!

I just finished my swap of 2.8 from 87GT into my 88 coupe. You will run into a lot of small problems. You use you 88 4 cyl bracket and moungt on the V6. You use the V6 clutch and pressure plate. You use V6 A/C lines, heater lines, fuel pump, fuel lines, wiring harness, dogbone, water pump, alternator, starter, coolant lines (you keep the ones running under your car in the 88 coupe), V6 radiator, and use the 88 manual trans. Bolts right up. Takes a lot of work though.
