All,

I am building a fuel delivery system for my 327 V8 install and have a couple of questions about the typical throttle body system in my car right now.

1. what are the pressure requirements of a carb? I believe its about 6 or 7 psi

2. If I use the existing fuel pump in my tank (output is about 13psi), can I route that directly to my carb, or do i need a seperate fuel press. regulator?

3. Does the regulator have to have a return line output going back to the gas tank?

If anyone has done this, or has info on using an electric fuel pump on a carbed engine please let me know. I was rather suprised at the cost for a decent regulator (about $150.00+). So I don't want to waste my money on something I do not need or the buy the wrong part. Thanks for nay input yall have.

The pressure required is going to depend on your carb, A quatrojet (sp?) is only going to stand 4-5 lbs, a holly can probly gandle a little more, but I think you will need a regulator regaurdless

Yep, holly states thatthe needle seat pressure should not go above 7lb.
On my V8 kit Archie had suggested changing the V6 fuel pump out for a 4cyl fuel pump.

Since I am still in the install stage (read as broke) I have not yet tested this config.

I will also run a fuel reg. @ 7# for my ride, without the return line.

Hope this helps. But, as stated above I have not put this into practice.

88Ironduke,
I'm using a bypass system with the 84 fuel pump that come with the car. I tried to use a static in line regulator but after the hose that connected the fuel pump inside the tank to the line out burst I elected to try a bypass system. I built my by pass system out of a T fitting and jetted the return line so I pick off about 5lbs to the carb. I used a vacuum/presure guage to measure the pressure and tapped the T for a screw in jet. Then I drilled the jet stepping the bit size up one size at a time till I got the pressure at 5lbs. Sorry I can't remember what size bit I ended up with to get the 5lbs. I did use an in line filter just in front of the T so I didn't get any trash in the jet. I realize this isn't the most accurate way to regulate the pressure but its been working trouble free since 1999 on my daily driver and it was easy to make from the materials I had at the time. I'm not sure what the so called proper setup is for this but I know I've had no problems since I put my idea in place.

Butter,

I was thinking about something along those lines. I had thought about using a jet/valve idea on a bypass line to regulate fuel pressure to a required psi to my holly 4bbl. I had figured that the fuel pump that runs my current 4 cyl TBI would pump until some weak point let go. That would make me sad...

I am not sure of what direction I wanna go at this point. A homemade system or a complete regualtor from Jegs or Summit? If you have any pics on the project or such, hook me up. I need ideas for some parts. Thanks

I found the archived message to'Zorba' that I participated in a while back when I started up my 1st V8!!! This setup is still working fine in my car. Note: pls read in entirety as I was mis-informed at the start about a Holley Adjustable regulator. "the 2 OUTLETS can be used for TWIN carbs setup, otherwise plug 1 of the OUTLETS" https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Archives/Archive-000001/HTML/20010706-2-006030.html

Here is a pic of my fuel regulator set up. With out the gauge it would probably fit behind the battery. Summit has one (pn: hly-12-803) for 21.95 that would do the trick for you. If you wanted to go something like mine Mallory has one for $74.95also through summit

Thanks for the help everyone. If I read correctly, the thread above says that the return line is not neccessary with the 4 cyl fuel pump. I am unsure of the exact workings of the pump's internals, but I'll buy it. However, I like LS1's setup. Its clean, neat, professional and most of all... Done right the first time. I am going to run the regulator setup as shown. I like it...Alot.
Thanks...
