Getrag makes all sorts of trannies for all sorts of cars... GM, Ford, Hard core equipment... TONS of applications.

The "Getrag 282" is the only Getrag specific to Fieros.

I have a Getrag 284 in my Fiero, but they came on W body cars like Grand Prix GTPs.

Getrags are everywhere and still being built today. Just different "models".

The BIG mystery is how to pronounce it... Get-Rag or Gee-trag?

Keep in mind that the Fiero 'Getrag' is a 'Getrag' only in design; it was actually manufactured by Muncie.

This is correct. It is sometimes referred to as the Muncie-Getrag transmission due to this. Muncie also made the 4-speed trannies used before the Getrag, so it's usually called a Getrag to avoid confusion with the 4-speed Muncies.

Keep in mind that some factory literature calls it a 5-speed Muncie. This is the Getrag, just calling it a Muncie since it was made by Muncie.

The Isuzu 5-speed is a different transmission and came on 4 cylinders only.

Clear as mud?

Getrag is a German Transmission manufacturer and design house. They specialize in Porsche Trannys but HEY, when GM came calling, business is business.

The MG-282 stands for (M)uncie, (G)etrag, model 282.

Muncie and Getrag actually collaborated on the design. People tend to call it a 'Getrag' because it is less common than Muncie (which can refer to many American transmissions).
