O.k. my temp. gauge does'nt work so I had determined by doing a search of old topics that it was the fitting screwed into the head closest to you under the hood, right below the coil. So I went and bought what the computer called for as a temp. gauge sending unit and it is different then what I pulled out of my head(that did'nt sound right did it? ). So I went back up to the parts store and the dude was very helpful, having owned a Fiero himself once, by pulling out the master parts index and it still did'nt have the same fitting that I have. The thread size fits the hole but the pins are different and so is the shape of the connector to re-hook up my harness. I dont want to rig up my harness in anyway. I want to get the right sending unit. The fitting I pulled out is the temp. gauge sending unit is'nt it? If not where is it? Was there a change in sending units somewhere along the line and mine is obsolete? What gives here guys? I dont have a manual yet to look anything up and I hate being ignorant about my cars but I havent even been able to find any manuals yet! Car info in sig. Thanks for any help.

There are 3 temperature sending units on the 2.8. One sends the coolant temp to the ECM, one turns on the radiator fan, and the third operates the temp gauge and the idiot light. It sounds like you are looking at the right sender, it is on the head under the coil bracket. I had to take the old one to the parts store to match it up, they kept giving me the other two.

That's what I did. I said "this is what you gave me, this is what I need" and we looked it up in their parts book, since the computer only showed the one they had sold me, and still could'nt find it. I guess I could try a different parts store, maybe someone else will have different manuals.

Oh yeah, thanks for confirming I was looking at the right thing!!

Anyone did it recently and have the part#?(I know, its a loooong shot)

Well that link I gave does'nt bring up the right page but this is what it says(below). It is the one I need. Apparently its an '84 4cyl., '85 V6 only sender(?).

84-85 TEMPERATURE GAUGE SENDING UNIT
AC Delco temperature gauge sending unit tells the gauge what temperature the car is running at. If your gauge does not work, then this could be the problem. Fits: 84 4 cylinder w/ temp. gauge and light 85 V-6 w/ temp. gauge and light

I don't know if this will help at all but I will give you the info I have. Does your dash have a temp gauge above the fuel gauge? ( I know my 86 SE did as well) Because For an 87 2.8 Fiero the GM part number is 25036809. list is $40.40 wholesale is $28.28. That is the current number too I just purchased one a few weeks ago. Maybe it will help for cross referencing. If you would like a pic I can take one of the end to see if the connector looks the same.

There are two coolant temp gage sensors listed in the 22P. Both are 2-blade terminal, 3/8-18 THD.

The first # 25036628 is for the 4-cyl 84's and V6 85's that have clusters with the oil gage and light combination. I have no idea what that combination is. My best guess is that there is both an idiot light and the gage using the sensor, but I'm not at all sure.

The second # 25036809 is for all 84-88 models (4 cyl and V6).

When the Pontiac dealership replaced my sensor they used part number 25036809. The service writer said they had to use that part because they could not get the other, but that it would work ok. Mine is an 85 GT.

I actually had a post on this--coolant temperature switch. I was concerned about it (I didn't have my 22P at the time), and still do not really understand the exact difference between the two sensors.

Hope this helps.
