I have seen some people on here using 3400 to describe the 3.4 TDC/DOHC engine as well as other engine misnaming. I would like to offer my knowledge of the automotive world to put the correct names to the correct engines to try to limit confusion...
3.1L -- Three versions were made by GM, all equipped with hydraulic, flat-tappet cams:
-3.1L MFI - Camaro/Firebird iron head engine
-3.1L TBI - FWD Minivan iron head engine
-3.1L MFI - FWD GM car aluminum head engine
3100 V6 -- Two versions made my GM, both equipped with hydraulic roller cams and aluminum heads:
-3100 Early - standard rocker arms
-3100 Late - roller rocker arms
3.4L -- Two versions made by GM
3.4L MFI - Camaro/Firebird cars with iron heads and might have a roller cam (I am not sure)
3.4L Crate - Available from GM Performance Parts for use in carburated S-truck platforms and equipped with iron heads
3400 V6 -- One made by GM, one camshaft, OHV
3400 V6 - Equipped in FWD car and van applications and all equipped with roller cams and aluminum heads, I am not sure all had roller rocker arms but most did.
3.4 TDC/DOHC -- Three versions made by GM
3.4 TDC Early - No cam sensor and one crank sensor, one piece upper intake plenum with integrated throttle body.
3.4 TDC Late - Two crank sensors and one cam sensor, one piece upper intake plenum with integrated throttle body.
3.4 TDC 96-up - Two crank sensors and one cam sensor, Two piece upper intake plenum with seperate throttle body and different exhaust ports/manifolds/heads than previous engines.
Hope this clears things up...
