How can I tell if the recall work has been done on the 84 I just bought.
Take it to a dealer and ask, and trust them??
The car was a one-owner female, she does not remember any recall.

When they did my recall on '84 the dealer glued a little (like 2"X 3")aluminum warning sign just ahead of the shifter. Something about the need to perform regular maintenance to avoid engine fires etc.

If I recall the recall one of the things was to install a larger capacity oil pan. Original oil pan only held something like 3 qts of oil.

There should be some stickers under the engine compartment lid indicating that the recall was done. However, mine was done but I found no stickers??

Also check for the same stickers under the hood up front on the driver's side next to the RPO code sticker.

Also, check to see if the rubber weather strip is still on the front edge for the deck lid, that was also removed in a recall.

If mine has never been done, can i still take it to the Pontiac Dealer to have the recall done, or is it too late?

Your best bet is to take either the car or the vehicle I.D. number to the local Pontiac dealer. They should be able to run the VIN through their system to show any applicable recalls. As far as time limits, there shouldn't be as this is a safety recall. But if it hasn't been performed it may take a call to Pontiac customer relations to get the ball rolling. Good luck.

I found evidence of the recall being performed. The was an updated maintenance schedule in the owners manual. I have a cousin who is/was a dealer mechanic on Fieros. He said all they did about the oil problem was change the dipstick to read full for 4 quarts instead of 3. I checked with the dealer and their computer did not show any due safety recalls due.
Thanks for replying everyone.

Where is your dipstick? If the recall has not been done it is in front of the engine, right over the exhaust manifold. If the recall was done the dipstick is to the left of the engine near the coolant thermostat housing>

As someone tried to tell you above...

The full recall text is linked in my cave. Most are at the Michigan club site.

Among other things... 84 had the dipstick replaced and relocated. It also called for use of the longer PF51 (now PF52) filter. (xxx3980 in the Allied Signal [Fram] number system.)

PF52 can be used on the later 4 cyl versions as well. Don't forget to add the extra cup or so of oil that this filter will allow. Using the PF52, I fill about 4.5 quarts to the full mark on my 87 DIS L4. (Put in 4 quarts, run it a couple minutes, then add any thing needed to make up what is now held in the filter.)

NO Fiero, or any other car, should be run low on oil! Many new cars are even easier to damage if oil pressure drops even a couple seconds here and there. This is due to the increasingly tighter tolerances many engines are built to.

NO Fiero, or any other car, should be run with a fluid leak! Oil and other fluid leaks can set any car on fire. In Fiero this is even more of an issue due to the exhaust layout. Fluids that drip on the ground in many other cars often drip right on Fiero's exhaust.
