Looking at the luggage rack, I'm a little perplexed as to how any item can be securely tied down onto one of these. Was this rack ever really intended to work? Has anyone here ever used it for cargo? Any "luggage rack adventures" to tell?

Yeah it works. My daughter used hers to haul the "big" stuff when she moved. There are holes that are used for the tie downs. I wouldn't want to put a lot of weight on it though.

oh yeah, they work great. Theres holes on both end for bungee hooks. Me & the wife go camping in the Fiero. Looks kinda funny with the tent & stuff strapped to the decklid. makes the rearview mirrow damn near useless. I keep 6 bungees in the trunk for just that.

I just hauled a couple of loads of bagged mulch the other day. I stacked them up even with the top of the car and used the holes on the luggagge rack to tie them down. Not sure about the weight, but it had to be pretty heavy. The guy at the store laughed and shook his head as I pulled out of the parking lot. Gotta love these cars, truly multi-purpose vehicles!

in my first car, when it still had the lugauge rack on, my mom forced me to put a 10' rug on it sideways, boy was that a trip to remember, we d*amn near knocked some person on a bicycle flat when taking a turn, funny, but im glad we didnt hit him. we got some looks, i just said, screw this, and went as fast as i could all the way home, never did/will do that again but it didnt budge, i'll give it that (but the leakyness didnt get helped at all by that) ~Mark

I carried a lawn mower a few times bungied down to the luggage rack. It fit and rode fine, but it looked really goofy with the lawn mower handle sticking out from the back of the car... I sure got some strange looks from bystanders... Maybe I'll load it back on and gat some pics...

I use mine frequently. I coach girl's select soccer (Harrison Cobras Girls U11 www.harrisoncobras.homestead.com) and my soccer bag fits nicely on behind the drivers head with just a couple of bungee cords. I also use it for the 5 gallon gas can for the lawn tractor cuz it won't fit in the trunk and it stinks up the inside of the car.
In fact, I think the cars look 10 times better with a wing and I've even bought one but have been hesitant to put it on because I don't want to give up the luggage rack. I'm seriously considering having the existing decklid painted and getting ANOTHER decklid painted with the wing installed so that I can switch back and forth. Maybe Rodney Dickman could even come up with a way to quickly swap decklids!
I've also considered removing the little decklid luggage rack "wing" and just capping off the 3 places it attaches to with "ends" from the other places AND installing the my wing. That way I could have BOTH but my buddy thinks I'm nuckin' futz and that I won't want to haul anything back there if I ever get the thing painted anyway.
Last summer I went and got a 14000 btu window shaker. After the money was exchanged he said "I hope you have a truck because it won't fit in a car" I said no problem and he pointed me to the loading dock. The look on his face was golden when came wheeling up to the dock.
Same thing happend at Sears when I got a new 60 gallon hot water heater last spring. Dewd asks me where my car is and I said "its the white one" He honestly thought I was kidding and got this sheepish smile on his face. I was like no, thats the one and his smile turned to He earned his 4 buck tip.

i brought a fiero dash home from a bone yard (a 40 mile trip) on the back of my fiero one day.
I pulled up to a yard with my fiero while the owner was standing out front. I asked if he had any fieros in the yard and he said "yup" I asked how much to take all I can carry? He looked at my car and thought for a second and said 40 bucks. DEAL! got my tools and commenced the salvage operation. 4 hours later he asked me if I got my 40 bucks worth yet and I looked at my car and and said "nope, still got room"
hood fender 2 door skins front and rear fascias 2 complete headlight assy dash board and center pod instrument cluster clutch master and slave passanger rocker panel coolant and wiper bottles starter motor misc relays Including the fan relay and other odds and ends.
Not to shabby for 40 bucks
Not only do people have misconceptions about the fiero but they also under estimate it's ability to carrry lots of big stuff.

I once hauled a pair of Phase Technology floor standing speakers, a gift from my (ex)girlfriend to her brother. Was almost fifty miles.
I used to carry my bike on the roof, but used to get paranoid about not being able to see it, so I got a rear end rack. I still used the roof rack a couple of times to carry seamless (9' wide rolls of paper 12' long, used in photography. There's no wall/floor joint behind the model's legs; it looks "seamless.") when I bought it.

One time I had to jack up the back of my car, but my buddy had borrowed my jack, so I used a cherry picker and lifted the whole back of the car up by the luggage rack! Yeah right I've used it a couple times, hauled an entertainment center on it once. I never liked the way the rack looked though, so I got rid of it and got a spoiler

So far I think all I've carried on mine has been a bunch of old hockey sticks bungeed to the rack, and a flat tire from a friend's Ford Tempo. No engines yet...
I'm laughing myself silly reading 84 Bill's adventures...he definitely gets the prize! Love the pictures...want more!

OK now HOW did u get a hood back?
I can see the rest but seriously a HOOD where did u fit that?! I don't think I'd ever use my luggage rack... I think the fastback panels would get in the way or get scratched or I'd bust the glass with something sliding around. I'm just afraid lol, I need a wing.
I've used mine for some heavy things... had two Fiero doors on it and an automatic transmission for an 86 Dodge Caravan on it. I carry 80# bags of water softener salt on it several times a year. The transmission had to mass about the same as the engine above.
Weight on the deck lid isn't a problem as long as it is spread out.
Tie down is important....
DO NOT trust the eyes in the rack for heavy loads all by themselves. A strong load on those eyes could pull them out. Run a line or two under the lid to something more solid. Or just loop a couple lines under the lid. When I did the transmission I ran a line under the narrow part of the coupe lid and another across the back edge. That way the whole lid gets loaded up.
