I know the Grand Prix GTP's have them. But can someone tell me all the cars and years that come witht he series II 3800sc engine?

I'm looking for one for an engine conversion. Also what is a good manual transmission to go with that?

Buick Regals I believe, as well as Bonnevile SSEI.

As for manual trans... I'm by no means an expert, but I think everybody uses the Getrag 5 speed

You can use either the 4 speed if pre 86 or 5 speed post 86. Swapping the auto to manual is difficult unless you have a complete set up to install. ECM is diff I think and needs to be changed. A auto is best to use in a boosted application IMO because you can load the engine up off the line and shifting is way faster with a auto. Use the search button at the top right and you can find out all sorts of interesting things

As far as using a manual, you will prolly need to have the PCM re-programmed by DHP to disable the tranny error codes if you use a 99 or newer PCM.

3800sc motors come in gtp grand prix bonneville ssei, buick regal and buick riviera. as for trans most ppl use the 5 speed fiero getrag that comes in very late 86 v6 cars to 88 v6 cars. some use 284 getrag out of 90-92 lumina and other w body cars with 3.4 dohc. i have a 284 in my 88gt with 3800sc. that tranny is a major b$%&^ to install. the fiero getrag holds up quite well even with alot of abuse.

i know the power ranges and shift points are differnt between the two engines. With the differnt rpm ranges, is there any mods you have to do to the getrag so it will be compatable with the 3800?

the tranny bolts up however you do need a custom flywheel. series 1 3800 needs neutral balanced flywheel. series 2 needs a 96 up camero or firebird externaly balanced flywheel turned down to about 1/8 inch from ring gear. i would never use a series 1 because series 2 are cheap and very easy to find.

they are also found in the 96's but that is an intro year and not included in upgrade options. Though you can still do some upgrades. They also used a vacuum modulated trans in 96 and a full electronic in 97 & newer auto's.

you can also get a 3800 s/c in a new Monte Carlo SS

Series II began in 95 for the NA engines.
Series II began in 96 for the SC engines.

Not sure what year they switched from calling it a "3.8L" to a 3800. Late 80s? 1990?
