the reason i ask, is a rumor arround town to somthing of the matter of that there is a yellow 85GT that is seen here in Sioux Falls every once in a while that was suposidly going to Archies in a few weeks for a zz4 swap, and then TADA!!!! a few weeks later this shows up, id just like to know where he is from, and possibly where he works, im sure since the owner is paying archie $1,000's of $$ im sure they have BS'd a little and possibly he know where he works and is from id like to find out what i can and possibly meet up with the owner if/when he's in the Sioux Falls Area
if im not mistaken , it looks like it might say "Lions" on the bottom middle of the plate, which stands for the County and that would be the Rock-Rapids Area i think? and thats right inside the Ia. border from SD, and only a 15-20 min. drive from Sioux Falls ------------------ Rich * '86 se: , 2" drop, coil overs, KYB's., ported manifolds * '86se: ,350 bored .030 over,World Products s/r Torquers - ported, Manley valves, edelbrock 750cfm, carb sanderson cc90's,4:10,Spec stage 3copper puck clutch , adj.Koni's, Eibach's,polly. and lots more!! *'92 BMW 325i : borla exhaust, ST brace, cold air intake

To me that looks like Linn on the bottom of the plate. Which would be about 20 minutes away from here. It would definatly be cool having a beast like that running around here.

I'm very sorry..... I've been taking pictures of the progress but haven't posted them yet.
I've been having extreme joint pain in my wrists, fingers & sholders for several days now. Setting here & typing, or even sleeping (like right now) has been very difficult.

Tuesday..... remove a few things from the engine compartment that are not needed and get it ready for the 11st. trial fitting of the new engine/trans assy.
Here it is, the trial fit is to mock things up and make sure all your ideas are going to fit properly. On this swap we are using an aftermarket TPI system called the "Big Mouth" we need to mock it up to make sure it'll fit the same as a normal TPI system. Also check for clearance all around the engine. Check for right side hinge box clearance to the forward valve cover. Make sure alternator has enough "swing to tighten the belt before the alternator contacts the forward crossmember.
After the trial fit and making any adjustments it's time to remove the engine/trans from cradle & do welding, cleaning & painting of the cradle.
more to come.......

After painting the engine cradle it's time to final assemble the engine onto the cradle. We can walk around this assembly and install componets like the chrome valve covers etc.
Then we have to clean and paint the engine compartment. Make it look good now so the engine will have a nice home.

Reinstall the suspension and start putting everything else back together.
Hook up shift cables after installing the 5 speed shifter and cables. Remount slave cylinder. Start putting the intake system together.
We spend the rest of the day Thursday and most of Friday. Installing the wire harness, cooling system, GN fuel pump, customer supplied braided brake lines, bled brakes, bled clutch, install wheels, .......

Must be the angle?
The "Test Fit" pics show the intake plenum itself... the "installation" pics show the intake manifold and fuel rails, but not the intake plenum. Did that help?

Your kit is different than mine, but you may have to modify the hinge and Lid beam to get clearance. Use some real good expoxy, my conversion is 10 years old, but you can see the stress cracks where the modifications were made (getting it all redone the end of the month).

I always look for 'Easter Eggs' in your pictures, and I can't come up with any this time around.
But I was wondering how much clearance you have between your cradle and this radius arm?
I hope you smile about that and that your doctor perscribed something good... I have osteo, and sometimes it takes trying out 2 or 3 different types of meds before you will find one that will work best with your body chemistry. Good luck.

Yes Kid, that mod. has to be done on all TPIs. I've been making a similar mod on every TPI I've done.
Thanks

Looking great Archie- Can't wait to see it finished and driving! Did you run into any clearance issues with the "Big Mouth" TPI?
Hope you're feeling better soon.
Well now that you ask. Sometimes (almost all the time) I HATE using aftermarket parts like this manifold. I'm sure it will be ok when I'm done but I've run into several glitches that have caused me the loss of about 8 hours and a few $$ to work around.
Things you don't think of when you buy something like this. For example:
1) We were planning to use HEI ignition on this car but find we can't. You see the top of the lower intake manifold is about 1/4" too high and the bottom of the distributor housing hits it before the distributor is fully seated. Had to switch to the non HEI type distributor & lost much time trying to find one.
2) Stupid bolts....... the bolts that fasten the tubes to the upper and lower intakes and the T.B. to the intake all all metric just like the regular GM TPI is. HOWEVER, every one of them has to be a different length than the original GM bolts are. Off to the Fasterner supplier several miles away. Most don't carry a wide variety of metric fasteners, so I had to special order mine. Two days later they come in (we were "working around" this while we waited) guess what the hex head custom length metric bolts won't fit. Like the heads hit the larger tubes as you screw them in. Back to the bolt place to special order the same lengths only in Socket Head Cap Screws this time. = loose another day.
Some people say I charge too much, but they aren't there, this kind of stuff is what I deal with everyday & it gets to be old after a while.

I feel your pain (or frustration at least). I try to plan every !@#$%^& thing I can think of every time I do a project, but I still end up missing stupid little parts that are hard to find on short notice.

LOL about the 'Stupid Bolts', boy do I know what you are talking about there! I was going to replace mine because they are now tending to show a little rust, black coating depleted, damn hard to find a complete set.
I think the GM guy who designed that intake system drank way too much regular coffee. It works great, but they could have made it less complicated on the hardware side.
What size throttle body are you putting on the monster???

The cam in that engine is rated: Intake: .474 Exhaust: .510
I'm running a ZZ9 Cam rated: Intake: .483 Exhaust: .520 with 1.6:1 rocker making it: Intake: .515 Exhaust: .555
I haven't stepped up to the 58mm throttle body (a step below at 52mm) for the same reasons your worried about. I think mine will handle it, but that's an expensive throttle body to make a decision on. You'll have to provide some feedback when you get it running.

Archie, I'm looking at doing a zz4 build sometime soon (8-15mos.)and have a few ?'s if you would.
I take it you are using the zz4 stock cam - if so then I assume it produces enough vacuum to run with the tpi? A fellow worker thought the zz4 stock cam would not. Also, how much purposed gain in hp/tq does the tpi add?
Are you using all hard mounts for the assembly - from the pictures it looks like at least two are. What is the hinged mount's function?
How do you guys go about painting the engine bay? Do you remove everything and then paint? I ask as it looks very nice and only the walls are painted - nothing is painted that shouldn't be.
Finally, could you include some exhaust pics on how you did this particular build?
