I just bought an 87 GT about a month ago and need to take care of a few "TLC" items one being re-painting the car. My hood seems to be the worst part as it has a lot of fading and white paint showing. (the car color is maroon). In addition, there is a section right at the passenger side headlight that has paint chipping off and a small section that is chipped off to the fiberglass level.

I'd like to buff/sand/repair this section myself before going into the paint shop to try and cut down on the costs. I've done a search and found some topics recommending Bondo, Duramix, etc. Still a little confused and just need some pull in the right direction.

What would you guys recommend? Use some sort of fiberglass repair kit to fill in the chipped area and then sand and primer??

Thanks.

If it is just paint chips (common occurance), you should only need to sand down to the base enduroflex panel, paint on a primer, sand, put on the color coat and clear.

If there are chunks missing from the panels, depending on size, some body filler (Bondo) could be worked in then sanded to match the contour, prime etc.

Just take your time, and most of the chips will be hard to see.....

Hope this helps,
Michael

Thanks for your reply guys. I will take your recommendations.

It's not a hole, but just a sizeable chip (about 2 inches) that's flaked right off down to the fiberglass/plastic.

Just sand them down. Make sure you use a wood block on the paper, so you wont make dips that show in new paint. You can fill small dings that go into the plastic itself after you prime it with 'Spot Putty' then block sand and reprime.

thanks.

so I guess it's just a matter of sanding down the existing imperfections, priming with putty, letting it dry, then sanding down, and then repeating this process until it's all smooth.
