Mine is a 90 Olds. 3.1L; 160k miles also and running smoothly. Original A/C still working (@134a). It has gone through 4 alternators, its only weakness (but easy to change). I bought it new and ran on Mobil1 from day 1.

Benno

>>>manly-van heh, better keep my wife away from this thread...she may take the Fiero away from me and hand me the keys to the Siloo.

I thought the '90 4.5's had a little more- they got a lot of the improvements that made it into the 4.9's (heads/intake)
Anyway, it has much more cojones than the 3.1 did

I've got the engine management squared away, and it only took 12+ revisions to get it 'close enough'. I added a homemade dog bone because the mounts just could not take the abuse that they were getting. All the wiring is tucked back into the factory locations and the engine appears almost original. I still am not satisfied with the way the tranny shifts. I swapped governors and it made the shifting different, but still not what it should be. Next on the agenda is the shift correction kit and 'hopefully' I can move on to putting the rest of the van back together- I stripped the complete interior out so it could be cleaned. Too many projects, not enough time...
Oh, and the updated picture:

The major parts of the interior are back in and I've put a few hundred miles on the Manly Van in the past week or two. It looks like it is going to get somewhere around 18 MPG with mixed city/highway driving (with the 125c non-O/D transaxle!!!). Oh, and so far a v6 Ranger, a loud Eclipse and a 4x4 Tacoma have fallen victim to the 'sliding door sports car'.

I'm going to have to build me a 'sliding door sports car' when I start having a family to fill it.

I finally got the shift correction kit in the transaxle today and need to get the throttle valve cable set a little better. The wife has been driving it to work every day and it is getting a little better than 17 MPG in stop/go city driving. The only problem now is there is some lifter noise from the replacement lifters I put in. FWIW, the Sealed Power roller lifters that I bought tick loudly at less than 35 PSI of oil pressure. I guess that I should have saved my lunch money long enough to buy OEM, because now I still have to buy a good set of lifters

Just in case you ever wonder how fast an auto tranny will empty its entire contents of oil when the cooler line comes off, it takes less than 1 block at 45 MPH. I have a big mess now I am just glad it happened with me driving instead of my wife and I was able to coast into the driveway before it completly quit pulling.

I found out in my Ciera GT. Looked like I was drive James Bond's Aston Martin as the fluid from the split line hit the manifold.

Bad news. The tranny acts like it has a monster stall converter until it locks and then it does fine. The guy at the tranny shop said it felt like the tranny was shifting okay, but the converter just doesn't have any 'grab' to it. The problem started when the cooler hose slipped off where I had it clamped to one of the fittings (3/8's inch vs. 11/32 inch).
I checked on a set of new OEM lifters and a replacement transaxle and found the most ecomomical thing to do is push the van off a steep cliff.
But the wife wants her van back and the local junk yard just pulled in a nice Caddy with 60,000 miles on it and tomorrow morning, I am getting that new engine/tranny for the Manly van. I will then throw another set of aftermarket lifters in the current engine and put it in my "plain jane" '85 coupe.
To add insult to the whole ordeal, even with the slipping tranny, the van got 24 MPG on the last tank with all in town driving. That is better mileage than her Corolla, the 'Vette or the Thunderbird. Maybe with a fresh engine and O/D tranny, we can do even better.

The holidays have been busy in Cooterville. I managed to grab a 70,000 mile 125 tranny from the family's hand me down Cavalier- my mom bought the car new in 1987 and it went to my sister and then to my brother, who wrecked the car and it has been sitting for about 5 years. I put a torque converter from a Caddy 4t60 into the 125 and after a few hours on the lift, the van has new life
The new tranny (with the Caddy converter and governer from the old tranny) works very good. The shifts are nice and firm, no more excessive slipping and full throttle shifting is about right for the Caddy engine.
Now, if I could just get something done with these ticking lifters...

Hey man, good to hear you resurrected this topic. And good to hear that your little van is doing well also. Man, that would be awesome to have a van like that....that would make the ultimate soccer mom....Zero to Soccer Field in less that 60 seconds....hehe

I want that van! The funiest thing will be when your wife races the ricers and blows there sorry butts away....the whole time she will laughing as they stare at the bumper stickers! LOL!

I once met a guy that dropped a 350 in an Astro. The thing had so much power that when he put into gear the back end dropped about 6 inches. He left the longest burnie marks I have ever seen van do! I guess it was a big ordeal to get it to fit in the engine bay, as the stock engine was forward facing, and he had to drop the 350 in sideways!

Nice job on it...hope you can calm the lifter noise!
