Well just as it states, is it possible to convert a used turbo u can find at a junk yard to a centrifugal supercharger? My understanding is that centrifugal superchargers are just turbos driven by a pulley rather than the exhaust. Not sure if this would be a cheaper idea or what but I figure you don't need to worry about blow off valves and connecting the exhaust and stuff, just gotta split the turbo and put a pulley on the one end and figure out how to mount it so the belt runs around it.

Any ideas? This a bad idea, better way to do this etc?

Ivan.

p.s. love the new look, much cleaner.

A turbo spins at 70 to 100 thousand rpm.
With an engine turning 5000 rpm, this would require a pully ratio of 20-1.
The centri chargers are geared to elimimate the need for large differences in pully size.

no, a centrifugal supercharger is not a belt driven turbo. a supercharger is an actual compressor, a turbo charger is a very very very fast fan. they work in VERY diffreent RPM ranges, the supercharger being closer to engine RPM, while the turbo spins at amazingly high rpms. at lower RPMs the turbo wont create boost, it'll just be like the "electric superchargers" - moving air, but making no pressure. I dont think you want to run a belt or chain at the RPMs needed to make boost from a turbo. and, it would seem like more work that just splicing it into the y-pipe. turbo is silly simple, and works super good.

The compressor section of a turbo and a centrifugal supercharger are both centrifugal compressors. What you are thinking of is a roots blower, which operates at engine speed and doesn't compress anything, but rather merely moves air.

hmmm... wonder if max ever made it... still im sure you would be getting some sort of increase in pressure to the motor(even at 45k), i hear the 2.8s have a huge intake problem and perhaps a used turbo setup like I said might give ya 30+hp by making the intake actually work. Perhaps using a bigger turbo at those kinds of rpms might help too...

anybody hear of anyone actually doing this though?
