Is there a place under the front deck lid where the lock nut key is kept? I bought this 87 from someone a couple months ago and just noticed that one of the lug nuts on the driver side rear tire is a lock nut. Thought maybe there is a place for it under the hood with the jack and spare tire.

thanks
Dave

Funny you should mention this......my hubby and I just had the same problem.....we went to take the tires off the car.....I only got the thing a few months ago and there they were.....locking lug nuts!! ARGH!! After looking all over the car he decided to try and chisel the things off.....but the lug nut only broke apart. So he ended up welding a bolt.....there is a nice hole you can do this in.....to the lug and taking them off with a socket and some muscle!

He called around and STS said they would take them off the car for $17 a piece. Other people suggested going to the car dealership cuz they have some keys there and might have one to fit your car....and another person said try hammering a cheap socket about the same size on it and getting it off that way....of course the socket would be broken so you would need 4 of them.....whatever you do good luck!

All i can tell you is that on the washer bottle there is a sign that states what kind of Factory lug nut locks they are witha code number for them. If you want to salvage them, you might be able to call GM and have a copy of the key made. If you get that number for me, I have a set of factory ones. My key may work and Id loan it to you as long as you promise to mail it back....lol . John

Isnt the lug key supposed to be wired onto the lug wrench? I know it is on a few of my other cars. If its not on wrench, look at jack or around spare and jack well, it could just be loose in the bottom.

All you have to do to get them off is hammer a 12 point socket over the lock nut. Use an impact and run it off. I have removed hundreds of them over the years, people used to get angry when they saw how easy they came off. You can do the whole car in about 15 minutes.

Where are they usually located?
Wherever they can roll, under either seat, stuck in the track, stuck under the track or just wedged btwn the seat bottom and the floor.
In the front under the tire, shoved up under and behind the headlight bucket or in the A/C drip tray.
Rear trunk, under the carpet by the engine cooling fan.

These are the most popular places I've seen.

The bloody thing could be anywhere. Look in all the places listed above. And pull out the spare.

It looks like a deep socket with a nut on the end. Like allot of spark plug sockets only not chromed.

Many dealers and owners never applied the key code stickers that came with them. Even if they did the sticker can be almost anywhere on the car.

The Locks are made by AMCOR for GM. Some GM dealers have a master set of locks. 1800PMcares can get you the number for AMCOR.

If you want new locks, McGard makes them to fit these lugs in a couple styles to match your wheels.

Locks are only ment to slow down some putz trying to swipe wheels/tires. Any serious thief has several ways around them.

Mine were in the glove boxes. One in the console area and the other in the dash area. Neither are really glove boxes are they? Try there and any other nook and vranny that they could roll under or into to. Have you tried your map pockets?

I replaced the wheel lock key on my '88 GT in March. I sent a check for $7.50 and the key code number (from the trunk lid) to:

GORILLA AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS
(A Division of AMCOR Industries, Inc.)
2141 E 51ST ST
LOS ANGELES CA 90058

Maybe there's one of these taped in your owners manual. The key number is on the back.
