I've been looking under the rear ends of many cars to try to find a REALLY quiet muffler that will fit in the stock Fiero location For my DOHC conversion. I pulled up to a light behind a new Nissan 350Z and noticed that it had a dual outlet with the muffler mounted in the same location as the Fiero. I rolled down my window to listen to it and it was perfectly silent, even when he accelerated. My question is, does anyone know if the 350Z muffler will fit in the Fiero with no modifications, AND does anyone know which components also exist in the 350Z exhaust system (resonator, cats, etc)?
I can only offer this... a photo of a stock 350Z exhaust (the one on the right)... It looks like a dual-in/dual-out, so it'd take some reworking of the stock exhaust (single-in/dual-out). But it'd be interesting to see physically how large it is!
Now that's what I'm talking about! Looks like if it would even fit it would have to be flipped over for the Fiero inlet to be on the correct side. And I see what looks like a resonator, but not a cat... I wonder if the cat is up near the front by the y-section? Thanks for the picture, that helps a lot.

Hmmm... you know - I think you're right... it looks like the stock one is just a single-in/dual-out (the aftermarket one is a dual/dual setup). We need someone who works at a muffler shop or Nissan dealer to give us a physical dimension on that thing!
Oh yeah... I saw another pic somewhere (I think it was on overboost.com), there are dual cats in front of the pipes shown. Here, I think you can see it in this pic from here

That's kind of what I was thinking...

I'm also looking for a quiet muffler for my 3.4 DOHC conversion (search for my thread using "DOHC exhaust"). I asked at WCF and they recommended the DynoMax Ultra Flo muffler. Anyone else used this? I plan to use a 2.5" pipe with a single outlet. They also make a single in/double out version. These mufflers are 14" (sport) and 20" (street) long, in a 4.25" x 9.75" oval section. You can get a .pdf listing from their website.

That's helpful. I had one of those with the single outlet maybe 10 years ago. It was pretty quiet, but it moved the power band up higher so the car didn't feel as fast off the line. I'll check into the dual outlet version. I may have to find a small resonator. I like the stock GT tips so resonator tips are out of the question. I'm sure there's room for a resonator in there somewhere like maybe right after the cat...

Thanks Buddy. From all the pictures that have been posted here and from looking under my car, it doesn't look like it's going to fit. If it does, it'll be REAL close.

The stock 350Z system looks like it has three cats. Two before the "Y" and one in the "Y" or as the "Y". I also think that they have a pressure sensative muffler. The as the exhaust pressure gets higher in the system a valve opens and deverts the flow to a less restrictive path. This less restrictive path is louder. So at low RPM it is quiet. I drove a Maxima with this system on it. Sounds good (if you can hear it) in town but if you step on it it gets louder as the muffler opens up. I think that muffler is way to big. The stock Fiero location is very small. But you could try to make a "dent" in the trunk that will let that thing fit in, but then you cant put the tire in there anymore.

GT... From looking at the cross-section I believe that most of the Ultra Flo mufflers can flow in either direction. They state that "All universal mufflers are reversible for custom installation". On the second page you will see that for the first two mufflers they do indicate flow direction. I'll be talking to WCF later on and get more info.

I know when I first did my V8 swap I used a dual in/dual out late 90's Acura NSX muffler and my V8 was very quiet....I really liked how it just purred. It is heavy though it has built in heat shields. I removed it about six months later because it kept comming off its hangers and crap. It does fit the stock outlets without modifications but with a trunk it won't fit under the Fiero. Nate

Thanks for the follow up Buddy. Doesn't look like it will fit without some sort of modification.
Might work quite nicely on a larger engine swap if someone is willing to loose the bottom of their trunk (which is not all that uncommon But yeah - definitely looks a bit too big for a stock application. Thanks for the info BuddyC...
