hey to pass the safty inspection here in hawaii I need to get my horn working. Since I've owned the car for about a year the horn has never worked. I have never needed the horn or required to have a horn. Now that my Fiero is here in Hawaii to be able to drive leagally I need to get that darn horn working. Any typical things i should look for to maybe try and fix it myself or should i just take it to a shop?

It can only be a couple of things.........

-the relay is bad.... do you hear a clicking under the dash when to push the horn button?

-the horn itself....they become corroded and need to be replaced.
to check if it's the horn, if you have a testing light, connect it to the horn lead/ground and have
someone push the horn button while you look at the light.

- the buttons sometimes don't make contact. remove the button, and clean the contact with a little
sand-paper
-if all the above fail.....it's the wiring.

I'm sure someone else will add to this .......maybe something I forgot.

Good Luck,
Michael

Fuse???

When I got my car, horn wouldn't work. Turned out to be the fuse, the same fuse that runs the interior lights that light up the floor boards and the always on power to the radio.....on the fuse diagram, I believe it's listed as Clock.

The horn relay is the white relay under the passenger side dash as seen in this photo:

When you push the horn button you should hear the relay click. If it does, then the problem is with the horn or the power that goes to it. If not, then the problem is with the fuse or the horn button in the steering wheel.

Not neccesarily true. I recently had to get one inspected-same problem. I could hear the click, but no horn. Tested for voltage at the horn-no voltage. Pop the cover off the relay, by puhing in on the 2 tabs on either side. That relay is real dinky-just a little piece of spring copper. I guess it get weak or oxidized from not being used. I just had to bend it out a little, 2 strokes with 400 grit, and it worked fine, so I put it on Jane's car and took hers.

Got a meter? Or at least a test light? Check the fuse with a meter, don't rely on how it looks because blade type fuses frequently fail by cracking and look just fine. Check for voltage at the fuse. Pop the horn button or steering wheel cover off and inspect the plunger assembly. Use the meter to check for voltage at the relay terminals when pressing the horn button or paddle.
