Been having problems with my alt belt starting to slip after a little while - this is with brand new belts each time. I noticed that the alternator has an extra groove than the waterpump/crank! Is the pulley on the alt something i can switch out to the correct # grooves or do i need to pull the alt and replace (really dont wanna do that!) Seems weird that I could get a alt that fits the car but had the wrong # of slots / grooves!

Yes you can get the proper pulley and swap it on the alternator. Getting a new alternator with the incorrect pulley is not uncommon. Alwyas count the grooves!

I've had that same problem before. I was snaping belts every couple of months. I turned out the alternator pulley only had 4 grooves while the rest of the pulleys had/have 5 grooves. I had to buy a fiero 5 groove alternator pulley from someone in the mall to replace it.

You'll most likely have to drop the alternator out of the car to swap the pullies. I would highly recommend looking at the rest of your pullies to see what kind of condition they're in. I had to pull off the rest of my pullies and clean them up because a great deal of rubber had melted to and built up on them.

Goodluck.

Just a reminder. Overtightening a belt can tear the fiber strands inside and lead to premature failure. good luck.

I replaced my alt with a new bosche. It came with the wrong pully (one extra grove)...
No probs at all here. I put an a new belt at the replacement.
Hasent sliped or made any noise for about a year.

Are you sue its the alt? Maybe one of the other pullys is screwed.

I put on a new alternator and paid no attention to the groves. It started squeeling and I noticed the alternator had 6 groves and my water pump had 5. I re-adjusted the belt so that the belt was in the first 5 groves on the alternator and have had no problem at all.
