You need to check and see if the engine is timed correctly. Take out the number one plug and turn the engine with a wrench until air comes out under pressure. At that point turn the engine no more than 1/2 turn until the timing mark lines up with the timing tab about the 10° mark (the tab has numbers on it, wipe it off to see them if you need to). The timing mark is the wide groove, not the two skinny grooves. At this point you should be able to see the piston at the top of the number one cylinder. Now remove your distributor cap and see where the rotor is turned. It should look like this:
Note the orientation of the six pole "fingers" to each other, and the direction the rotor is pointing. Whatever plug wire the rotor is under right now is the number one plug, and the firing order from there is 1-2-3-4-5-6 clockwise. If the rotor is pointing somewhere else don't worry, just make sure the number one wire is over the rotor and the rest of the wires are on in the correct order.
