I am going to repair some rusted frame parts on an Indy. I want to keep the original frame to preserve the future value of the car. I need to know where the hidden VIN #'s are so I don't end up with conflicting or missing #s. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The 84's don't have VIN numbers on the body panels, that didn't start until later. The only place I've ever seen another metal VIN tag on the chassis is under the dash on the top of the steering column support. It's also printed on the option code sheet stuck to the top of the left front fenderwell and I think on a sticker on the driver's door frame near the latch.

I think one is supposed to be under the drivers side speaker in the dash.

There are also build stickers on interior parts like the dash board, console, and instrument pod. They dont have the VIN on there, only the last 6 digits, but list the options on that assembly, also has the build date, and sequence number. After 20 years the glue is dry, and they are loose by now, and fall out.

If you are talking about the really 'hidden' VIN numbers, you don't need to worry about that if you are repairing rust. The numbers you are referring to are in places that you can't get at with a grinder, and if you need to actually repair a section of frame where the numbers are, you need to replace the frame. Basically, the seriously hidden VIN is safe from rust repair.

The only VINs I know of on pre 87's are the window, and under the drivers speaker. I dont know for sure there are others, these "hidden" vins. As much of these cars that Ive chopped apart, Ive never come across a VIN that other than the normals. I wouldnt worry too much about it, because If some one is going to chop you're car apart to check the VIN number, you've got begger problems

The hidden VIN numbers that I'm referring to are only going to be checked if the car is stolen and stripped. They are there to help law enforcement identify a car that has had the obvious numbers removed.

Yep, the same thing I was thinking, and the last thing I would do is post the info where they are "hidden" on the internet for any thief to see.

Believe me, the chop shops already know where the hidden vin's are. Since most professional car thieves are selling direct to the choppes, the average pro-thief doesn't care. Neither do the teener joy riders.

When I changed the body of my Suburban, I had to have the title changed to reflect both VIN numbers. The body VIN was new because it's welded to the firewall and cannot be switched legally. This is my project which is still being reassembled.

https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum6/HTML/018744.html

Both VIN numbers need to appear on the title so if it's stolen and stripped, the investigators will know that it's not a previously stolen vehicle or that parts weren't from stolen vehicles. But, when doing major changes or repairs, having pictures does help out if something crazy happens.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. I am getting a shop built and will begin work on the car this winter. I got the other 84 I have to sign a donor card before it died so I have a good supply of mechanicals to work with. More later...
