I've got some ideas for customizing the stock dash and I was wondering how difficult it would be to re-route the AC vents above the stereo. I'd also need to completely move the AC controls...which I think may be a harder job. Any words of wisdom??

Some have totally removed the center vents and just use the ones on the side. Rerouting would be difficult unless you were making a custom. When I installed my Firebird dash, I glued 2" PVC couplings to the existing A/C box and used flexible A/C hose that's available from various A/C installers.

The center controls can be moved easily as long as you don't exceed the length of the wiring or slider cable.

Hope this helped,

MrFixit is right, but just to be a bit more descriptive: The corner vents and the center vent are fed from the same plastic ductwork.. You could trim the duct at the center exit and block it off with tin or something, then attach two round exits to the duct on or near the block-off plate as Roy's done with the PVC. Or even eliminate them completely by leaving them blocked off.

As for relocating the HVAC, the wiring is the easy part to extend. The heat selector cable is pretty limited in length, I doubt you could move it more than a foor from the stock location. The good news is that the ends are pretty much common to most GM vehicles of the era, if you could find something with a longer cable (I would check something like the Pontiac Transport) you could easily get more room to move the controls. Be very careful not to bend this cable unnaturally - they get tough to move if you kink the inner wire and you could wind up snapping the plastic lever on your control. Trust me on that one.

HTH. And some pics would be cool to see.

yeah i was hoping to move it up to where the AC vents are now and integrate a touch LCD screen...here are my long range plans. keep in mind that i'm by NO means a car expert so any help/tips would be appreciated.

-AC vents removed, AC controls moved up
-radio removed. this would be replaced with a 5-7" touchscreen. this would in turn be hooked to a laptop running a wireless network behind my seat. this way i can upload MP3s directly to my car from my home PC.
-engine replaced w something more powerful. V6? V8? cost is a big factor to me at this point. I just need something a bit more powerful
-flat black paintjob with chrome trim. the grills on my trunk would be chromed for instance.
-aero nose and rear facia

Sounds like the easiest way to go about it. No fussing with extending any wires, or running new hoses. Try taping up the center vent for a while first, make sure you're happy with the airflow out of the corner ones. You can always find some slimline rectangular vents if you decide to keep the center vent. Check out hotrod air, vintage air, southern air, etc - places like that who sell aftermarket AC kits to hotrodders.

Just an ergonomics preference, but wouldn't you find reaching around the shifter to get at the touch screen a bit awkward? What about putting the screen on the top and the controls on the bottom?

very good point about the touchscreen! hmmm that means bumping my controls down and that shouldn't be a prob i just know that i've had a bit of difficulty getting them moved up when i've gotten into the dash before
