I'm going the opposite way from most people with my exhaust. instead of trying to make it more aggressive, I prefer a really quiet 'sleeper'. Thus from a recommendation on this site sometime back I purchased a CC Insert resonator muffler from http://www.carchemistry.com I couldn't be happier with the result. It quited my exhaust considerably. Ken, the owner, mentioned quite a few race people use his products when they don't have a muffler, as it quiets the nose at eh track really well.
He also has other products which I just quickly took a glance, about porting the heads, etc... and steeroids. Sure would be nice if that were offered for the Fiero.... (bolt on power steering rack and pinion)
Thanks Glenn

They custom made it. 10" long and 2.5" in diameter. Without a decibel meter, I'm guessing it cut the sound down by about a 1/3. If I wanted it still quieter I guess I could get resonator tips which I may look into later. But for now my wife is happy, and so then I'm happy.

Funny you should mention that, as I've just installed some inserts that I fabricated today. I used an 80 series Flowmaster for my 4.3L swap and it was just too "ricey" for me. I'd done a lot of work to fit the Flowmaster in there so rather than just start over with a different system, I've fabricated some inserts that I installed in some stock Fiero V-6 twin tips: Sorry I didn't take any photos of them before welding them in, but each of the 4 inserts is made from a 6" piece of 1 1/4" tubing. I've drilled five rows of five 1/4" holes in each one and blocked off the inner end. I didn't use any of the donuts along the tube like the one in your link, but it's still made a dramatic difference in the tone on my exhaust. sounds much more throaty and mellow now instead of raspy and....... v-6 like Total cost was about $5.00 for all 4 of mine

I had the CC inserts. didn't do much because I have no pipe after them(installed like the pic above. They do change the sound, but they don't make it sound that nice, IMO.

This is one heck of an innovative idea with the home made inserts. Very clever. What gauge metal did you use? Back pressure concerns? Now let me ask a question for the folks here who have the tube mufflers or resonator tips, anyone have a cat on their car? I am looking for a way to quiet my cat-less stock exhaust and wanted to know your opinions.

Thanks. When you're poor you learn to improvise
The tubing is just regular exhaust tubing scrounged from the muffler shops trash can. I was a bit concerned with backpressure, but I figure with four tips to split it up it shouldn't be a huge issue.

i run a cat, and no muffler on my gt. its got resonator tips too, and it sounds mean as all getout. i always get looks from rice while im driving. the very first hour i had the car, i was driving home, and this guy ina honda civic pulls up next to me, but 1 lane over, he gives my car this "o m g....." look, then turns. it was great
has a nice deep rumble, sounds good revving, and isnt too loud. problem is, its soo deep, that it sets off car alarms. (which i love )
Id like to hear that silenced car (or rather not hear it ) can u post some sound clips?

Been thinking about this thread for two days now and I have read about 100 threads in the archives about tips, mufflers, resonators, tubes and traps. Go figure that I have just installed new systems on both my V-6 cars.
My 86 V-6 with a 4-speed, new stock muffler but no cat sounds just fine, aggressive but not overbearing. Very happy with this set up, been like that for years, never get a second look from neighbors or police.
My 87 V-6 with automatic, same set up, sounds horrible, loud and obnoxious. It sounds like I have a big fat hole in my muffler so I am not at all happy. Eventually, I will put a cat on the 87 but not right now, I want to perform some minor work and have all my shielding perfect first.
So my first thought is to make my own tip inserts just like Russ544's, give that a try and see what I think about the sound. Its going to take me a couple of weeks because of work obligations but I will post my results. Still might try that tube muffler if this doesn't work out. I will let everyone know how it goes.

My tips actually affect the tone much more than the volumn . they do make it a bit quieter also, but 80% of the improvement is from the removal of the harshness in the exhaust note. Since I built those I've been wondering what effect it would have to leave the inner pipe open on both ends and wrap it with fiberglass (perhaps drill more holes in it for this method also). Lots of possibilities to experiment with, but the beauty with this setup is that you can try different things without much effort. good luck with it.
