... just waiting for something creative to happen to it.... Rusty Battery Tray... meet POR-15 Silver and POR-15 Black...
The tray was POR'd on 4-11-04.
And if you have ever read up on POR-15... it warns NUMEROUS times to top coat POR-15 with UV resistant paint. So that gets me to wondering...? What happens when POR-15 gets exposed to daily elements... ie, Sun, Rain, Birds, Bugs, Sprinklers, Wind...
The battery tray is sitting on the NW side of the house on an AC fan. Day after Day after Day... Here is a shot a little over a month later (I did wash the tray down before taking the pic) :
Pic from 05-22
You can see that the black has clouded quite a bit, and has lost its' sheen. The silver has stayed shiney, but is now discoloring. I plan on giving a follow up pic every month, and we shall see exactly how POR-15 holds up to UV.
Comments welcome...
------------------ REMEMBER: stoplights synch'd for 35mph are also synch'd for 70mph. (and for 140mph, now that I think about it.)
-edit- to post pic dates

Thanks for the positive response.... POR-15 actually converts rust at the molecular level. It doesn't just cover it... it kills it. Also, It seems I read that exposure to moisture actually makes the coating stronger... I might be wrong on that point though...
BTW.... Golden, I Really like what you have done to your car, I liked your paint thread over in General.

Thanks for the comment, I like my paint too
Now back to the subject, yeah I really need some of this stuff, because the upper sides of my trunk are starting to rust away. Where can I find this GOD paint you speak of.
POR-15 is a urethane product. Urethanes are cured by moisture, but once cured additional water has no effect. Because POR-15 is effectively a urethane adhesive it bonds to everything and sticks really well, so it blocks access of metal to atmospheric moisture, thereby preventing more rust.

Cool experiment. If I may make a suggestion, try to take each picture from the same angle and in the same light. Then it'll be easier to tell subtle differences when looking back over a dozen pictures.
I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Thanks Doug (will do in the future )... But hey... at least the stool in the pic is the same !
Answer to earlier an question: POR-15 website: http://www.por15.com TN: 1-800-457-6715
That info is from the catalog that came with the starter kit I bought ('bout $15.00)
Well it has been two months, so how about some more expoure to the elements of everyone's favorite rusty battery tray! This time I tried to position the tray in the same approximate manner.
Here is the shot from June 22:
And here is the shot from July 23:
It doesn't look too bad... the silver has stopped 'yellowing' and the black has faded to flat black in a very uniform and consistent manner. No apparent breakdown of the POR paint itself.

By the way, sometimes at big car shows there are vendors there who sell POR-15. I've seen it at the Super Chevy Shows a couple times, and also at the Chevy-Vette Fest in Chicago.
Hey, who had that great picture of the guy who dropped the open can of POR-15 many months ago? It splattered all over the poor guy! He probably had that stuff on his face for weeks.

That link will give you the exploding POR story. An all time PFF classic pic! BTW, That's a good tip on places to pic up POR w/o having to wait on mail order.
Oreif has used POR-20 (see that same thread) and he had good results. I am thinking about buying some 20 to use on a BBQ grill.

Is that your B&W Fiero in the PFF calendar this month? If so, that is one nice car! I like the paint scheme on the IRM wing stanchions. I see you are a 2001 guy also... with no ratings bar. Let me help that out by one

I knew I shouldnt have ever posted that picture of me....LOL Believe it or not, It was on me for a little while , but POR had given me hints on removing it, taking a shower immediately would have worked the best. JUST REMEMBER NOT TO PUT IT IN PLASTIC JARS. I never thought the picture would just keep coming back.... 8) John
Anyone tried the Heat Resistant High Temperature Por-20 Paint? Like for exhaust. Does it last?
I just bought some POR-20 that I'm going to try on the stock manifolds and y-pipe. Unfortunately, I won't be able to give results for at least a month, as the engine is in pieces getting rebuilt. I'm going to sand blast the parts first, as recommended in the instructions.

You can buy this stuff almost anywhere up here! Any autobody supplier, or paint shop will have it.. If not even check with autozone, part source, O Reilly, what ever your local shop is!
ha John! why make other people click on that link, which I observe is now in the archives
another great tip for POR15 is to put cling wrap under the lid before storing it (in the fridge) ((helps keep out moisture)). It makes it a hella lot easier to reopen the can. Otherwise it is like superglue.

***************************************************************** Blake, Yep, that's my 86 V8 GT ZZ4. Glad you like it. This forum is the best. It stimulates imagination and lets everyone know exactly what works and what doesn't. I've benefitted from hundreds of shortcuts over the years and can't praise enough for the forum and people on here. marty *****************************************************************
So to prevent Por-20 from exploding from a stored can, I should not remove the can lid and poke a screwdriver hole on top to get the paint out, and reseal with a plastic sheet and plug, and store this refrigerated. Plus a caution on dangerous fumes. Anyone tried the attachment kit for spraying the Por-20 ? Is xylene a good thinner for spraying?
