Would this be good enough to lift the back end of a Fiero off the cradle?
Should I spend the extra $30 and get the 2 TON one?

The back end of a Fiero is only about 250-300 lbs WITHOUT the cradle.

1 ton = 2000 lb
fiero - engine trans craddle = 2200-2400? and you are only lifting one end..

it should be fine

but why not get the 2 ton and be able to lift the whole car if you wanted..

Always go for over capacity when it comes to lifting. The minimum hoist I would reccomend is a 1-1/2 ton (3000 lbs). It is better to be safe than sorry.

Make sure whatever you attach the hoist to can take the weight. Don't want anyone getting hurt- or killed.

As stated above, it's better to over-build your lifting rig.

But remember that it take a LOT more hand chain pulling to raise a 2T hoist 1ft than it does a 1T the same distance.

Thanks, I will probably go with the 2 ton.
I never get under a car without jackstands.
I am going to make a frame out of 2x6 around a 4x4 and have a plate bolted in the middle for the hoist.
Its going to be permanent so I have to make it look good. If I don’t go this way I will pickup a 1 TON FOLDABLE SHOP CRANE for $199.99 and wont have to build anything.

I'd say go with 2x8s at least and be careful how you bolt it together. I'm more concerned about the frame than the hoist.

Personally, I'd have a safety chain around the frame/fiero when its at the height you want it.

Unless you REALLY know what youre doing, the foldable hoist is probably a good idea.

I can sure appreciate that! I was a carpenter in the Navy and a welder for 15 years. The last thing I want to do is pull the carport down. I have been looking at hoists all day and think I found the one I am going to get. I plan on going to some used equipment places first but if I cant find one I may go back to the idea of the chain hoist and frame. I just don’t have a lot of room to store a fold up hoist but I could take down the chain hoist and put it in a bucket and store it in my shed.
