What code number / letter in the Vin is the painy color ?, I'm wandering if my 87 Gt was Medium Garnet red when new.

Paint code isn't in the VIN it's on the RPO sticker on the fender well in the front compartment by the brake booster.

The paint codes are listed with the suffix U or L , to designate upper or lower (accent) color. They are in the RPO code label as Phil said.
87-88 Medium red metallic is # 77

The Color Numbers I found were 77 U & 18 L so if the 18 means silver then I guess the car's orginal colors are correct.

Yep , L18 would be medium gray metallic (accent) (1984-87)
