The one that's in the rubber intake tubing going from the manifold to the canister, the little one. What is it called? I think mine's shot because nothing at all happens when I unplug it while the car is running and my check engine light started comming on after I had been playing around with my intake tubing.

At a guess, I would say it is the MAT...manifold air temperature sensor. A better description of it, and which engine you have, would make it easier to be more definitive!!

It sounds alot like he is reffering to the EGR sensor. Its a switch that tells the computer that the EGR is good and working.

Sorry, the little sensor that is in the rubber hose going from the V6 engine to the box/canister. It's pretty small and grey.

It's right around there, it's the only sensor actually ON/IN the intake tube.

Well, I have just been out and checked my 86 v6, and I don't have any sensors mounted in the air intake tube.I have checked my GM book, and it doesn't show one either...so I am wondering if somebody has moved the one from the air filter canister to the actual tube, or whether it is something aftermarket? I am really sorry not to be able to help any further..I must be pretty dim!!

There is a temp sensor that is in the filter canister, they could have moved it.
Look at the left side of your filter canister and see if there is a sensor there.

There is an air charge temperature sensor that screws into the air filter housing. The only thing on the intake tube is the return pipe from the front valve cover.

Ok, mine is put in there aftermarket. The person who had it before me had taken away the canister and just put in a K&N filter.

Thats the MAT sensor (Manifold Air Temperature). I would check what code(s) were recorded when you were messing with the intake, the MAT could throw a 23 or 25 which would indicate a faulty MAT sensor or connection to it

I've also heard them called ' Mass Air Temp & Mass Ambient Temp' which is probably a better discription because it is supposed to determine the outside air temp the for A/F mix.
