I got this 87 GT now and am going to restore it to its former glory and am trying to get things lined up. The car has surface rust in the wheel wells, battery tran and other places, there arn't any holes yet, and I want to stop it before there are holes. Now I was lookign at the Por-15 rust coating stuff and was wondering if the stuff is as good as they say. I like the idea of being able to coat the rusted parts with this stuff and not have to worry about it again.

Also Por-15 makes a engine paint too that you can paint on a old engine too, any ideas on that also.

Since my car has no engine in it I want to make it nice before it will get the engine. I thought about powder coating parts like the cradle and suspension, but that gets spendy when you don't own any of that equipment and have to pay someone else to do it.

BTW, the battery tray still looks great (considering the UV fade), and it has been about a year.

I saw some headers coated with POR-20. It looked like really nice stuff, held up to the heat and didn't show any corrosion.

Looks good, thanks for the info. I think I am going to Por-15 the body and everything i can unbolt will be powdercoated.

Check out my build up...
Ive done alot of my fiero with POR15.
wear gloves, it dries using moisture...and hard to get off your skin.
I also have the engine paint in t-bird red, but havent applied it yet because Im not done stripping my engine.
One warning though, dont store it in plastic containers... I did and it exploded in my face.

I've got a picture of one of my brothers after he dropped a 5 gallon bucket of used diesel motor oil.He looked worse but I'm sure it was easier to get off than yours will be.It isn't funny, but it sure looks funny!

POR-15 is great for rusty areas. it does not stick well to shiny surfaces, or good paint ones. Make sure to sand them to get something for the POR-15 to hold.

The engine paint is excellent. Used it on my 3.4. The red, though, kinda looks pink when cured. You may want to stay away from that particular color!!

I like to sandblast the rusted part bare and use the zinc-rich Rustoleum "Rusty Metal Primer" right out of the can or cut it down with paint thinner about 10-20% and spray it from a gun.. Works incredible !, Just be sure its the OXIDE stuff.. they sell a cheaper version that has no oxide..

Zinc-oxide is used on aircraft to prevent rust where oxidation on an alimunim panel can make the rivets loosen and the plane JUNK, It creates a chemical reaction that wont allow rust to form in the first place...

Remember science class and how two different metals and a liquid creates A BATTERY ?

Well add in a little rain-water to the copper ground and the metal space-frame in the rear quarters and you get this...

Adding power to it by making that area a ground connection for the rear lights did most of this damage.., It was on the other side too !

Here is a before (corroded), During (oxide primered) and After (black gloss) of my Fiero #1's front end...

Before: Rotted, corroded, road-salt, dirt, flaky paint...etc, This was pressure washed then wire-brushed bare all over..

During: Rustoleum oxide primer...

After: Gloss black from the gun...

NOTE the angle-head copper wire-brush used to remove most of the crap in no time..

And YES this is the same car from that rotted picture link in the previous post...

The black wont fade to green like the Por, But if you like POR then let it cure then paint it the gloss black...

Either way the oxide stuff works just as good in my-eyes and its MUCH CHEAPER and one gallon in the gun could probably do the whole space-frame head to toe easily..., I do mine in "areas" and over time..

Por-15 works great! only problem is it is UV sensative and will dull over time if left exposed. Now on with the pics!

Yeah, it did. But I jumped right into the shower and cured it and it peeled off. veggie oil will also take it off. The company did send me another quart for free, so that was cool. Oh yeah...it tastes horrible and does burn your eyes.
