Forgive me if this sounds stupid. Can you paint the exterior of the gas tank?

I read somewhere that tanks were finished with a static/spark resistant coating. Before reading this, I'd wanted to hit the tank with POR-15 for extra rust protection. I was talking to a paint guy the other day, and he thought the "spark resistant" coating was BS and looked at me like I was an idiot.

I don't need to know if I really am an idiot, but has anyone ever heard of a special coating on gas tanks?

I think that the tanks are simply plated. I painted one with Martin Senour zinc protective paint. Looks like the original color. Haven't put it in a car yet, it's just a spare.

You aren't an idiot. Yes, you can paint a gas tank with POR-15 or any other paint for cars. If you are going to use regular automotive paint, you'll need a good primer first since it's bare metal, but with the POR-15 you can just brush it on.

Good luck!

Thanks guys!!

I have had two tanks rust out on me, so I wanted to protect this one going in!

Again, thanks for the info AND pics.
