When I have my shifter in any gear, I can move it side to side very easily almost like from 1st to make it look like it's close to 3rd gear. Is there a way to tighten up the shifter to get rid of any play in it? It also sounds like it has something loose when I do it, it kind of makes this clank noise. It shifts fine and everything, it just has some play in the shifter shaft itself. Let me know. Thanks.

Take the shifter console off and move the shifter left and right and look for areas of looseness. Then have someone else move the shifter and watch on the trans for areas of looseness. Unless something is broken etc it is probably a little here and a litrtle there that all adds up. I have some rebuilding kits that will help. But there is always some sloppiness from having a cable shifter.

Follow your cables to the trans, you`ll see that one of the clamp bolts is either off or loose on the trans-housing, just ran accross one of these last night.... Really take a look............

I had one of the cable clips under the console to come loose.
I don't think that is your problem, but if all else fails, you can pull the shifter surround
and console to check. Mine is very snug after surgery (shifter )

Wear on the shifter mechanism can make them very loose and imprecise; the one in my red car was so bad you shifted by guess and hoped you hit the right gear.

Rodney Dickman makes shifter rebuild kits that take care of all the problems; I installed one of these and it was just like new again.

The Fiero Store sells the assembly set at tighter specks than the factory. I think around 100 bucks for complete assembly.

I appreciate any vendor willing to supply the Fiero community... but... Rodney's shift assembly rebuild kit is top notch, and much better bang for the buck than the Fiero Store's rebuilt assembly.
