Look at Team Dynamics Pro Race 1 wheels. Their 15x7 wheels are offered in multiple offsets. Their 17 inch wheels come in three different widths... 7" -- 7.5" -- and 8". Numerous offsets ranging from +23mm to +48mm are available in each width. Generally they are reasonably light for a 17" moderate price rim. 17x7=16 lbs.; 17x7.5=18 lbs.; 17x8 = 20lbs. Not available in a chorme finish, but there are several alternatives.

Strange that you should ask.

I just got off the phone with the folks.

They called me back yesterday to tell me that the 17x7, 48mm offset was no longer available.
(I just *knew* this was going too well.)
He asked if I would be interested in a 35mm offset. I told him that that was not an option, and explained why.
He said that he would call the warehouse back and get more details.
Turns out that the 48mm 17x7 is still available. Guess which centerbore it comes with?! Freaking Subaru!!!
I asked him if he could have them bored. (I really like these wheels.)
He said he'd check on it and give me a price. Called me back after a few minutes. $50 to have both wheels bored.
Added on to the bottom line, that's still cheaper than the TSWs were going to be.
They should ship early next week.

(I wonder how much the shipping duties are going to be. Hope they don't eat me alive.)

For the other folks who are interested in these things, I asked him if the "universal bore" 17x7 48mm version was out of production, or just out of stock. He didn't seem to think they were out of production, but they probably wouldn't be getting any more until Spring.
Are custom wheels "seasonal" in the frozen white north?

Okay. Check this...
One of the online wheel warehouses had a message board that contained a post (from one of the company employees) that basically said that FRD wheels were basically a "no name" wheel produced by Mille Miglia.
I decided to do a little bit more research.

http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/DisplayWheel.jsp?wheelMake=Mille+Miglia&wheelModel=Evo5&wheelFinish=Bright+Silver+Paint

The Evo5 looks like the same wheel, with rivets added beside the spokes. Might be worth pursuing.

Whew... shopping for an 88 is fun isn't it?

Good luck in your search, hope it comes together for you.

Well... my search has finally come to an end.

It's official, I ordered everything today. I went a different route and wanted to try something new & different. I went with 15" in front and 16" in rear. Basicly I used the staggered approach common today with mid-engine, only I used late 80's early 90's sizes. Old School mixed with New School.

Had to order the rims from one place, 2 tires from a different place, other 2 tires from another place, and got the rings & lugs locally in order to put it all together.

I'm just glad it's over.

Could you weigh those when you get them before putting tires on? All the other 17" wheels I've seen are over 20 lbs!! I'm concerned about weight but I really love the look of those wheels and the offsets are just right.

Sorry. I bought them with tires mounted. I can weigh the combination and compare it to my Konigs if that will help any. It's not advertised as being "lightweight", though.

Skybax,
Good luck with yours! Hope it all works out like you want. Don't forget to post pics.

Thanks Raydar,

Believe it or not... I just found out today that the newer MR2 Spyder model uses 15x6 up front and 16x7 in the rear..... which is what I ended up going with.

(due to limited wheel selection, not lowering the car, wanting some sidewall, and keeping the geometery and fitment as nice as possible)

Wheels should be here on Tuesday, get the tires mounted by Thursday, and should have them on the car by the weekend.

Looking forward to seeing and driving the final product.

17 inch Mille Miglia HT3 in carbon grey, fit perfectly with lowering springs front and coilovers rear.
Width: 7 front with 215-45-17 and 8 rear with 245-40-17, which in diameter is as close as you can get to original.

.................OFFSET IS 35 mm on both wheels.................

Posts about wheels are worthless without offsets guys

one thing to think about is if your rims have too much offset its easy to make an aluminum spacer with concentric ring - but if you don't have enough offset there is nothing you can do..

i picked up some 17x7 rims with 48mm offset - if they are tucked in too far i'll just make a concentric spacer.

I would never use spacers on my car. That's just me and personal preference. I'd rather go with correct fitting rims instead of trying to make up the difference with spacers.

You won't need to... 7" with 48mm offset is perfect for the front of an 88.

7" in the rear with 30mm offset is perfect.

You have a little more flexability in the rear, 25mm minimum, and 40mm maximum.

For an 86...

Factory comes with 7" wide and 30mm offset front & rear.

You want your 17x7 wheels to be 30mm offset front & rear.

30 to 40mm offset is the best operating range for pre-88 with 7" rims and slightly larger tires.
(215/45/17 front & 225/45/17 rear are most popular)
7" rim with 48mm offset on the rear of a pre-88 will most likely hit the strut.

This discussion was for 88 model Fieros, which are completely different.

Please try not to confuse the readers.

pardon my infraction on your private 88 discussion - I was just sharing a source of rims with that offset is tenzo.

(plus a higher offset will counter the effect of going to bigger brakes on the front of the pre-88s)

Steven,

They're 235/45-17 in the rear (on 8" rims) and 215/45-17 in the front (on 7" rims).
I don't look for them before the middle of next week. They might ship, tomorrow.

Here ya go Raydar, pics as requested. Was able to get the tires mounted this evening. Crystal had her bowling night, so that gave me the perfect oppertunity to spend the evening in the garage.

Hard to take photos in a garage with one light bulb, camera doesn't want to coroperate. Please ignore the pink paint, hehehe.

http://photobucket.com/albums/v11/skybax/Fiero%20GT2/

Thank gawd it's over. (well not quite, still have to customize centers)

I'm real happy with them. Plain-jane, no-bling, old fashion styling, some sidewall for stock spring height and rough roads, and a modern mid-engine staggered setup.

It's pretty much what I was after, and correct fitment above everything else. Even spent the extra few bucks on McGard lugs instead of the Tawian lugs.

I'm exhausted

Hey Skybax those wheels are really sweet.
I would be interested if you could tell me what the ideal offsets would be for
17 X 7 front and 17 X 8 rear on an 88.

Thanks Man, appreciate all the info !!!

the wheels look good... I'm a fan of the relatively simple designs - k.i.s.s.

I had to put my 17's on the rolling chassis of the 84 last night in order to push it around - flat dry rotted 14's do not roll well..
the 48mm offset on the 7's look great on the 84.. only problem is i realized how badly it needs to be lowered - 4" of wheel gap

Thanks.

Your going to get different opinions Zoom, but here is my take on it.

17x7 in the front... you want 45 to 48mm offset (closer to 48 the better)

17x8 in the rear... you better talk to Bigfiero man about 8" rims in rear

Optimum front tire size... 215/45/17

Optimum rear tire size... 235/45/17 (could also use 245/40/17 max)

PS:

I just saw you thread on your 88 front end rebuild... nice!

PS:

For those who are interested in those wheels, they are American Eagle Alloy Series 192. They come in chrome, polished aluminum, and silver finish.

Here are the specs: http://www.aewheel.com/wheels_detail.cfm?id=97

The 16x7s or 17x7s would work great on 84-87 Fieros.

Here is the home page: http://www.aewheel.com/default.cfm

Just swapped some email with my tire guy. He told me that mine shipped this morning.
Strangely enough, these wheels had the correct (universal) centerbore. Therefore, they didn't need to be bored out. Schweet!

Okay... They all finally made it here. (The shipping company saw fit to dole them out to me, mostly one at a time, over a five day period.)

The fronts (17x7, 215/45) are 42 lbs each. The rears (17x8, 235/45) are 47 each.

Finally got pics...

The caps say "CSA" instead of "FRD". I was told in advance that that would be the case. No problem. They are still the same wheel.
They are actually made by Mullins Wheels in Australia. http://www.mullins.com.au

The fronts tuck in nicely, and the rears seem to stick out about as much as stock Formula wheels.

I only drove it to the top of the street and back, but the steering does seem to be a bit lighter than it was with the 40mm offset Konigs.
I haven't checked the fronts for interference with the LCAs yet, but neither the U-turn at the top of the hill or the sharp left into the garage caused anything to scrape.

EDIT - Sorry about the stupid borders. Gotta fix those...

Thanks! I think these fit the looks of my car better. Personally I like gunmetal, but the style was just too overstated for my tastes.

FYI... Mullins website claims that they have distributors/dealers in the US. I sent them an email asking for info.
Not that I've had any problems with Tiretrends (actually, they were most accommodating), but I'm still shuddering at the prospect of paying the import duty on these things.
If I find out anything useful, I'll pass it along.

The fronts (17x7, 215/45) are 42 lbs each. The rears (17x8, 235/45) are 47 each.

Thanks a ton for weighing them. Those wheels look gorgeous on your car! I just might get myself a set when the time comes.

MMMMMMMMM I love those........sleek and sexy. If I needed wheels, I'd definitely consider these cause they're simple.......sweet! Good luck and peace.
