I was almost exactly where you are. Here's my thread:

Its pretty much the torque that defines it. The 3.4 has way more, making it more fun to drive than the 2.8. The horsepower isn't that much better, and you'll find that when you take it above 3500 RPMs. Bolt ons like rolelr rockers and a Trueleo intake will take care of that down the road. Good luck!

Big helpful tips:
Hang the Calipers, don't disconnect them.
Hang the AC compressor, don't disconnect it.
Hang the slave cylinder if you have a manual, don't disconnect it.
Make sure you remember what bolts go where, you end up with a lot of them with 2 engines.
Get the wiring harness on as soon as you can, it needs to around and under several brackets and such.
Have all your parts and gaskets ready to go before you start.
