I am putting a 3.1l V6 from a Pontiac Transport in my automatic 88 GT. I am using the 5 speed transmission and clutch-system from an 87. I have a new clutch and flywheel that I had bought for the 87 a few years ago and never used until now. Can I use the flywheel on the 3.1? If not which flywheel should I use?

You will need a neutrally balanced flywheel. If you on that you have had a counter weight attached to the back side it is for and engine that is not internally balanced and won't work for your application. Any 60 V6 neutrally balanced flywheel should work.

Does someone have a pic of an 88's flywheel? The neutralbalanced one? I think I have one but I'm not sure as it looks alot different than the Flywheel that came out of my 87.

Found out that what I have is a flex plate and not a flywheel.

Here is the backside of an early, external balance flywheel:

Here is the later internal balance flywheel:

Is that counter weight a molded part of the wheel or an added on piece? Can I easily get rid of it with a chisel?

edit: Thanks for the pix. + for you.

On a manual flywheel, it's molded in. On a flex plate, it's spot welded.

If you're running a 5 speed, here's the flywheel you need. http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?mfrcode=SFW&mfrpartnumber=6500&parttype=267&ptset=A

There's another link on the page for other vehicles that this part will fit.
(I posted a similar link for a flexplate in another thread.)

One option is to have the counterweight machined off the '87 flywheel you already have, and then have it balanced neutral. I had this done several years ago. This isn't very cost effective, since the machine work and cost to balance will end up more than the new flywheel price from Advance. I woud try to sell the '87 flywheel and buy the new neutral balance one.
