If you remove the boot you can locate these holes in your shifter. Shift the car into 1st gear and insert an 1/8 drill bit or rod into the holes. Now adjust the cables at the tranny so it is in first gear.

Here are a couple links from the archives.

any tips on adjusting it?

also ive noticed that the Pin on the shifter arm hits the "stop" in 1st and 3rd

This can be caused by the select cable being out of adjustment.

Use the procedure that Jake_dragon illustrated. 5/32 drill bits are a tigher fit to pin the shifter in place. Then make sure to get all the slack out of the cable by adjusting back at the transaxle.

Hey Rich, I had the same problem on mine last month.
The shifter goes into gear ok but it was getting harder and harder to get into first gear and reverse. Then it quit shifting all together. My slave was bad. Its a lot better now with the new slave. I still have to hit second every now and then to get it into first.

Now if your popping out of gear then it could be the cable.
Here is what I did.
Put the car into first gear
Loosen the shifter cables and make sure the lever is all the way in gear and wont move any more.
Put the rods in the holes for the shifter. This will line up the shifter in the correct position.
Now you can tighten the cables back up.
That is what I did to fix my shifter cables.
Cables stretch and need adjusted every now and then.

There is also the tensioner for the reverse gate. I had to adjust mine to make it easer to get into revers.
I just loosened the bolt on the shifter and moved it over till it felt better.

Now just so you know, some shifters don’t have the top hole. You will just have to do your best to get the shifter in the first gear position.
The front hole is to help with the select cable.
Good luck hope it helps.

OK, i just went out and did thistook 10 min topps
looks like now im at the end of adjustment on my select cable,
i havent driven the car only started it and rolled fwd and back in the garage and it DOES feel better

my select cabel may be streached but i think i have a spare ill see how it goes afteri drive the car.. which probibly wont be until monday or tuesday

i never knew these adjustment holes were there or knew there was a such adjustment
many thanks i wish i could give you another + Jake
i appreaciate all your help
we need a FAQ link with all great links like this in there

edit to add:
i really had to pull the shifter to the drivers side to get thevertical holes to line up

how about placment of the shifter assembly itself?
there is a good 1/2" of adjustment in the 4 bolts that hold the shifter assembly in place

Grinding going into reverse is the clutch not disengaging. Mostly likely in the hydraulics if it comes and goes with weather.

Moving the shifterplate back and forth I doubt will do anything since the cable and cable housing are both being moved the same amount.

I believe the Haynes manual describes a way to shim the cable housing back where it connects at the shfter plate. In theory this would correct for a stretched cable. I've never had to do it. My Haynes manual is at my shop 190 miles away so I can't check the procedure for you. Maybe someone else here can.

well the grinding in reverse is only when the car is cold and the idle is at like 2K once the idle settles down to normal, then all is good
