I find multiple answers when I search, what is the fluid capacity of the Getrag. I have a later one with dipstick, so I assume I can fill through there, correct. I know to use Synchromesh.
Thanks

I just double checked the owners manual, 1.9l - 4pts for the 5spd. I drained mine due to water getting in the oil, and then flushed the tranny quickly with kerosine (absorbs water). fully drained, it took about 1.5 qts to be over the top line on the dipstick. gonna change it again since I want to be sure all the moisture is out, so I'll double check when I fill it, but I know I was surprised after pouring in 1 qt it was almost up to the lower line. the other 1/2qt put it over the top. even when pouring in the kerosene, it seemed to fill very quickly, but that was out of a 5 gal jug.
I used the capacity from the service manual when I changed my tranny fluid. I went ahead and just dumped 2 quarts in minus the oil I spilled down the side of the transmission case (there was a learning curve associated with getting the bottle down there...don't ask). When I was done the dipstick showed the oil as being way low. I had my suspisions as to whether that was the right dipstick because it never really sealed the hole, it just kind if sat in there. I checked the part number on the dipstick with the one in the 22p manual and they were different, so I went down to the dealership to order a correct part and they told me I needed one with a third part number. When it was all said and done my new dipstick feels like it actually fits and it shows my oil level as being slightly high. After this I wouldn't give the dipstick the final say when it comes to fluid level.
Ok, I was wrong! just did a good drain and fill.(had to get the 5w30 out of there from that emergency change). front of the tranny was higher than the rear, unlike the last time. let it run out and spun it the tranny slowly to work the fluid back, then let it drain for 10minutes. put the plug in, set car level. poured in 2 quarts of syncromesh, it was exactly at the full line. so the owners manual is wrong. nice of them, even tho it is updated and specs the synchromesh fluid. the haynes is wrong. ( I don;t like tha book that;s why it was in the house and I checked it) the chilton however is more or less correct at 2 quarts. I would seriously doubt that you could fit 3.5 quarts in a getrag maybe 2.5 or 3 in a bone dry tranny. overfilling it will lead to leaking out the spline and soaking the clutch, that seal is a weak spot. oh, while you;re in there, check the oring that is on the dipstick. mine was out of the compression area, so the arm was loose, it was up at the top. likely that;s how the water got in there in the first place. I found one in my o ring kit that fit and replaced it, the arm now is snug and the dipstick solid in the hole. may not matter to those of you who only take the car out on weekends, but this is my daily driver, and the weather gods just don;t understand it isn;t nice to rain on me.
