j/k... I guess it would probably be wise to do this on a junk chassis first to gain experience on where to cut and how much, then cut up my good car I guess it's like the saying goes, $1500 to get a choptop, $20,000 to know just where to cut.

So for the rear window, you just gave a glass shop a template for a flat piece of tempered? Was it any more/less than a normal rear window?

Oh, forgot to ask if you were going to be lowering the seats...

I have a friend that owns a glass shop I just had to pay for the glass and not to have it cut but yes I made a template of the back window and took it to him.
I did not lower my seats I fit fine (5'11") without doing that but I have a friend that was in the car and he is like 6' 3 or 4 and I had to pop the sun roof. Having the sunroof gives you more room and I have Mr. Mike seats in my car and they are sweet they feel good and also sit lower than OEM so they are worth the money.

PS or not that car is sweet the silver looks good

I got the Mutt back on the road I replaced the headlight with one I had up in the attic but I still need a 87 or 88 headlight harness to use my 87 lights. Hint Hint; I got the duke running also I swapped the coil and it fired right up so I wonder if the coil going bad zapped my fuel mileage? Guess we will find out

Well the coil did the trick I am back up to 32 MPG I still cannot believe that the coil being week would do that but it did. The bad news is I have already bought the new motor to go in the car well it has 40k on it so it is used but new to me. It is to be delivered this weekend. I hope I did not make a mistake but time will tell. If I do not like it I guess I can swap it into the 355 when I sell it and put the 4.9 in the Mutt.

No this one will be a 3800SC I spent most of the night downloading pin codes and wiring diagrams and emailed them to Stu I think with his help I will be able to do my own harness and keep the computer with factory settings like my 4.9 is. I will post it all here as I go to help if anyone else wants to tackle it.

Sure he will do it for you. Have you tried laying an OEM windshield back in your T-Top car? I think it will work just might have to build a new shelf to move the bottom down or a dodge neon might work if you make a shelf to extend it out might be worth a try and you will have a more round shorter hood but would look cool.

Here are a couple pictures of the Mutts new motor.
As I got it

A shot that I copied from some one else but I like it the car waiting for the motor. I stripped most of it today and I have decided to build it on a spare cradle so I can continue to drive the car.

I went Friday to check out an option on a new trany for my car but no six speed yet. I am first on their list when a six speed G6 comes in. I went by a place I get all my upholstery stuff from and got my headliner material. It is 14 bucks a yard there and I bought 2 yards but only used half. So if you want to redo your headliner they will ship. It is called Sunbelt fabrics they are in Grand Prarie TX and their # is (972) 262-8756. I think they are cheap and they have good stuff. So today I worked on my headliner. First I had to fix it I got the Idea to glass it back together from a thread on here.

Next I had to cut 1/2 inch off the back of it to fit in my chop other than that it went in the same.

Next I took a picture of the material I bought I got the med. gray

I left the sunroof part intact because my first time to do this I cut around the opening but that was wrong you need more to tuck into the rail.

With the headliner in place I can now take out the sun roof and cut out for it and put the trim in.

I cut and place as I go around the opening

I did very little today to me it is really cold here and I hate to be cold so I did a little trim bending with the heat gun today. I put the dark gray up against the light gray that I am not using to show how I bent and reshaped the trim to fit the chop. I will get them in the morning a get some more pictures then.

I would heat the part until it would smell like hot plastic then I would put pressure on it and hold till is cooled some.

So you were able to get the trim pieces done without using fiberglass? Am I reading that right??

I just realized that you have no rear speakers, what are you doing, if anything, to compensate? I am adding seat speakers to my chop top cars, (even though they are 88s).

Yes I am using a heat gun and a thin saw blade to cut the end as needed why would I use fiberglass? The heat from the gun will make the plastic very pliable and bendable. Just be very careful not to over heat it. I will need to make a new piece that goes on the outside buy the mirror but I tore the originals up removing them. I have a plan for that I will use the same vent material I used on my hood. Other than that I have reused all parts on the Fiero except the glass. That is what is so cool about the Fiero chop and after getting the first one done and learning a few things. With the windows I had made you can chop it for less than $500.00 if you can do the labor yourself. I do not recommend trying it unless you are experienced at bodywork or have a friend that is. I don’t want everyone to think they can just go outside and get busy with the saws all but if you are good at some of it you can always get a local body shop to cut and weld the top back or even do the glass work for you if you want them too.
When the new windows get in I am going to chop a friend’s car to fit the windows and he has talked about doing a DVD of the whole process. It will be kind of like instead of sweeten to the oldies we will be chopping to the windows.

JScott to answer your Q about speakers I have the stock radio with the dash speakers and my car had the seat speakers in it but I put some behind the seats to sort of balance out the sound. I'm not a big music person so I'm not doing anything else to the stereo. I will put the antenna under the front fender and fill the hole in the fender but that will be latter. I did this on the 355 and it works fine and no antenna sticking up.

Want to make some of your expenses back?

I would love to see a How-to choptop video. I understand the basic process, but am still leary because I don't know what's going on with the b-pillars 100%. Now that you've done it once, I'm sure you know some shortcuts, and some "do's and don'ts". I would pay to acquire that knowledge

Lets see... $50 video, x 20 people, that's $1000, and I think you might even sell more than that.

btw- if I do end up doing this, it won't be until spring or summer of next year. What are the chances of a repeat window group buy by that time?

Legal reasons ? People will sue for anything.

Kid buys video, kid chops car, kid goes really fast, kid crashes, kid dead, Mommy and Daddy sue.

Helping someone out with tips and advice is one thing but putting a formal product out there showing how to do it could open up a whole can of legal worms IMO.

Maybe if you run a major disclaimer, it might protect you ? Would have to ask a lawyer about that one.

I would love to see a how to video, but first protect your self legally.

A lot more dangerous things than a choptop........ Kit car with a (badly done) frame stretch comes to mind.. "homemade" brake upgrades... V8 swap....

That makes me 2 in 4. Too dangerous to stop now, might as well get the chop video!

Virtually every product in the world has a disclaimer, yet that won't stop anybody from suing. In this country, everybody can sue anybody for any reason whatsoever. That's one reason why insurance is so high.

Yea what he said; I finally got my Camaro flywheel now I have to order a clutch. Then I will do a little experimenting with shimming the trany and motor so I do not have to have the flywheel cut down. I just want to see how this will work and save some money were I can. I need to get my spare cradle out and get it all together but with the weather being cold I just have women on my mind right now and staying warm so not much getting done here.

Well crap I guess I will be busy fixing my Daughters car so this means less work on my car. Dang my car looks tiny up side her car.

O yea She was racing after school but she got a lesser ticket They even ran through a stop sign she got lucky I just hope she has learned a lesson two speeding tickets and now this in less than six months. To think she wanted me to teach her how to drive my crotch rocket; yea right.

After she stole my Avalanche and crashed it she does not touch my cars I lock all spare keys in the safe just to make sure. I was just happy she was not hurt she is fearless and really keeps me on my toes.

You can always tell a true kit car guy they are always on the lookout for close looking parts. LOL. Tom the Nissan 240 ones that I used on my 355 is better.
I got my Clutch and new clutch pedal today I never replace a clutch without replacing the stock pedal with the new steel one from the Fiero store it is less than 30 bucks and well worth it. O I ended up using the Spec it was cheaper than Ram or Center force and I bout it strait from Spec so I was able to get the Isuzu throughout bearing with it and did not have to pay sales tax.

Tom did you get the 3.4 DOHC going? I want to drive the Mutt up to get a ride in it if you did.

stole your avalanche and crashed it, i don't blame you. if my kid did that, they wouldn't have any car or chance to drive. that's why i don't have kids.

O yea She was racing after school but she got a lesser ticket They even ran through a stop sign she got lucky I just hope she has learned a lesson two speeding tickets and now this in less than six months. To think she wanted me to teach her how to drive my crotch rocket; yea right.

maybe you should invest in a rusty, early 80s 6 cylinder dodge ram/ford f150/chevy 1500

I think the movie idea is really good, id pay $100 for it. And all you have to do is put a disclaimer on it like MTV's "Jackass" show and movie. If the guys from Jackass didnt get sued then I think it would be hard for you to.

Im doing an engine swap to mine first, but im going to a tech school in about a year and I figured I would chop it while I was there so if I had any problems I could ask my teacher.

You make it look really easy, where did you learn all that about cars?

When I get my web sight finished all the info will be on it along with other mods and how too. I will have a tech mailbox for any questions. You will have fun with it nothing like a group getting together and working on their cars. I do miss it when I had my paint and body shop I always had people over and we helped each other build our cars. I have to say the Fiero is the easiest chop I have ever done most were old coupes and trucks. As soon as the windows come in I will be helping a friend chop his so I will get to have some more fun, I just enjoy working on cars. I am waiting on my new 3800 SC harness to get done so I started doing a little more body work I decided to get it in primmer.

It looks a lot different without the wing

I like the wing-less look myself. only on the chops though. Stock looks good with a wing.
