So I am attempting to remove my rear 88 struts and cant get the nut off. I PB'd the suckers and braced the strut with a wrench and tried removing the nut. All I got for my efforts was completely removing the bolt edges from the strut shaft. So I now have a perfectly round strut shaft top and a nut that is still freakin stuck. Anyone have any ideas? I have new ones ready to go in so destroying the nut or anything wont be a problem. At the moment I do not have a strut spring compressor though and cant get one for a few days so if you know a way to get that sucker off without fear of losing a limp or something that would rock my world in a completely platonic way hahaha. Thanks guys.

What nut are you talking about?
There are 3 on the top that mount the strut top to the body.
There are 2 large ones that mount the strut bottom to the rear knuckle.
And there's one on the strut piston shaft that holds the spring on.

You remove the 3 top and 2 bottom bolts, then pull the strut/spring assembly out in one piece.
You then use a hex key or shock absorber socket (depending on the type of strut) to hold the piston shaft in place while you use a wrench to loosen the top nut.

You should use spring compressors. You can get a free rental (with deposit) from AutoZone, or buy a set for about $10-15 at Harbour Freight.

If you're talking about having a hard time with the single bolt that holds the spring on, look at the top of the piston. It will either have a hex keyhole for you to put a hex bit or allen wrench in to hold the shaft still, or it will have 2 flats on either side at the top. That uses a special shock absorber socket at fits over the top of the shaft and that's what holds the shaft in place.

This is what a shock absorber socket looks like:

If you've screwed up the top of the strut where the socket or hex key won't work, you'll have to cut the nut off. I don't think you'll have clearance for a nut splitter, so you'll probably have to use a dremel or angle grinder.

I loosened the top 3 12mm ones already. Its the center nut attached to the strut shaft itself. You don't need to remove that until later you say? I thought I had to take that off in order to remove the strut. If thats true that rocks! Cuz I have new springs and struts ready to go in so I wont even need to bother removing it.

That's true. Remove the whole assembly and if you are using new springs ans struts you can throw the old one in the trash and forget about that stripped nut.

Why would you even want to take the risk of injury by trying to remove them without a spring compressor?

stephsformula is correct, the big nut keeps the coil compressed, and is Dangerous to remove. You can remove the 3 smaller nuts and drop the suspension down. You might as well do as jscott1 says pitch the whole unit on both sides and install new struts and coils. Most any shop can compress them and put the big nut on for you.

You only need a spring compressor to remove the springs from the strut assembly. You pull out the whole strut/spring assembly together, so if you already have new strut/spring assemblies to go back in, you don't need to mess with it.

Lowering springs, I take it?

sort of. rear coil overs. looks like I need to remove the spring anyways and cant toss the whole thing because I need the strut plate. I didn't get a new one of those. gonna rent a spring compressor today and finish that up hopefully. Now I just need to figure out which poly bushing goes where lol.

Don't worry. The bushings are all fairly self-explanatory. Getting the cone-shaped ones in is a bit of a lark though.

Once you've got the spring compressed things can go quickly. There aren't a lot of parts to the unit and that big center nut holds them all together. : ]

Just a note of confidence!
