In reading through old articles about the 84 fiero, I keep coming across references to a lightweight turbo or twin turbo 2.9L V6 that was planned to be used in upcoming model years to give the car more oomph (along with references to the 2.8L that we know). Does anyone know more about this engine? Was this going to be a made-by-pontiac motor, or a modification to an existing one?

There was a 2.x turbo (not sure if it was .8 or .9) but if I am not mistaken it was in the 89/90 prototype. There was also a 3.X dohc in a prototype. The turbo one had the intercooler in the spoiler. I could be wrong.

A company in Michigan called PAS (Performance Automotive Service) built several turbo prototypes (engines) for GM in 1985. These are the same guys that built the Turbo TA in 1989.........Paul

There was a Fiero built with an aluminum 2.9l Turbo engine in the middle of the Fiero's life, but the car never left GM. Whether it be because GM didn't find if feasible or safe or if it was faster than the Corvette is up to debate. According to the Witzenburg book, someone made a name badge for it that read Porsche Eater, but they had to take it off when GM entered into a joint venture with Porsche.

Basically, the engine was just a slightly bored 2.8 with stronger internals for the boost.

The 3.2l DOHC went into the 89 Prototype and was the prototype for the 3.4l DOHC.

This statement is a load if sh!t:

"That is pure poppycock. Chevrolet is as excited as Pontiac about the car. It's a terrific concept and very well done. Chevrolet has no say whatsoever in what Pontiac does. Divisions do not get in each other's way in matters like that. It's to everyone's advantage at General Motors to have a healthy Pontiac Motors Division."

The 1989 Turbo TA was rated at 250hp at 16.5psi of boost. The reason was that GM had a CORPORATE POLICY that no car would be rated at a higher HP than the Corvette.........Paul

Wouldn't that be a hell of thing?! An intercooler for a spoiler. And the tubing would have to be flexable. Can't imagine what it would even look like.

"The performance was about the same levels as a 455 Super Duty powered '73 Trans Am. That would translate into zero-to-60 times of about 5.5 seconds and quarter mile time of about 13.90 second at over 100 mph."
How nice it would have been
Thanks for the link. Now I'm all depressed and going to bed

PS - hudini: nice zonda

There was a prototype 86 T-top turbo GT at the 20th. Indeed, it housed an intercooler in the spoiler.

The intercooler...

The decklid tubing...

The flexible tubing...

Huh. I don't remember seeing that one before. Thanks for the pics

If someone had the $$, I think it would be possible to make a 2.9-like engine today. Take the performance 3.4 block (aluminum), destroke it. Then add misc things like twin turbos, intercoolers, and all that jazz
