I bought a spare cradle off an '86 Fiero. My plan was to use this cradle to set up my eventual engine swap.

The more I think about it, the more I start to wonder at how hard it would be to set up an '88-style rear suspension while I'm putting the pennies together to get the engine.

Has anybody done this? Does anyone have a cradle they can take photos/measurements from?

All the rest aren't Pontiacs, so what does it matter?

Chapter 2 of the '88 GM/Helm Factory Service manual includes the following dimensional drawing of the '88 cradle:

Close, millimeters.

The '88 cradle swap isn't terribly difficult. Just be very careful to check the rear member of the cradle for cracks. 88's are notorious for this.

You know that little voice that says it can't be done? I duct-taped mine's mouth shut and pushed it down a flight of stairs.

Wheres about do these crack happen? I was looking it over recently and mine looks fine, but if I can weld stiffening plates to it, I'll do so.

I've never heard of the rear crossmember cracking anywhere; its pretty damn sturdy. On the other hand, the front crossmember does crack right around the holes that the front tranny mount bolts through. It would help to weld a plate in there.

Here is where my 88 rear crossmember cracked - twice (SBC car):

I replaced both front and rear with 2 x 3 x 1/8" steel and have been crack free since.
