Since i've had my 84 the washer motor has never worked. it doesn't make a noise, hum, click, etc. the wipers work fine just no fluid. i think the motor is bad but can someone verify that i'm on the right track?

this is the motor correct?

with the switch off i read nothing. when its depressed it reads almost 10 volts at the pump. time for a new washer motor?

You are Correct Sir!

That is the wiper washer fluid pump, and if you are getting voltage and no fluis, you need a new pump, as long as the terminals are actually making contact.

I had the same problem with windshield washer,so I opened it up and cleaned the contact points with some steel wool, reassembled it. it has worked like a dream ever since.

thanks guys. advance auto has them for $18. sounds like a cheap fix to me. anything i can fix for less than a 20 is a success.

just an update so this thread has closure. i replaced the pump over the weekend. autozone had it in stock(!) for $17. lost about half a gallon of washer fluid trying to get the little gasket at the bottom to fit. works like a champ now.

on a side note: when the wipers were on high or low and you turned them off, they would stop right where they were at. they would not return down to the bottom of the windshield. i had to use the mist lever and let go when they were at the bottom. now with the new pump they work like they are supposed to. must be something in the wipers that relays back through the pump. not a big deal but interesting.

yes, there is. there is a switch inside the wiper motor, so the pump does NOT squirt unless the wipers are moving. many washer pump issues are actually wiper motor issues.

well so much for closure. the pump works fine. but the wipers quit returning to the "down" position. it worked right after i installed the pump, now i have to time it right to get them down. i know it not a fuse but maybe a relay? will relays work on and off like that?

The parking switch in the wiper motor is malfunctioning. Usual fix is to just replace the motor.

yes. I thought I could just open the wiper motor & clean the switches. it is possible. I got lucky, and someone in the Mall had a brand new wiper motor for cheap, so I took that instead. I did open the old motor up & inspect - and yes, I do beleive the contacts can be cleaned/refurbished. but, it is weird inside. headlight motors are alot simpler - and if them scare ya - dont even try the wiper motor.
