I just rebuild my starter and really don't want to do it again for awhile. While I was at it I thought I would make a heat shield for it. I got the idea from this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymot...em=140168879637&rd=1

I'm flat broke, so I made my own.

What do you think?

Hmm, so your figuring the coolest airflow comes down from above and deflect cat conv heat? I'm thinking you need nice aluminum sheet to dissipate heat before it transfers through the mount tabs into the guts though. I could be way off & not sure what that's made of to be sure? Highway or city use? Something I'm wondering for those of us in normal states like my Michigan is swapping a cheap glasspack for the cat. These older cars don't have sensors beyond the manifold O2. The cherrybomb can easily provide similar backpressure comparable to a high-flow cat & hopefully run a little cooler. And judging by the simple tiny brick that mine is, I don't think Pontiac was concerned about stray spark coming through possibly igniting soot in pipes. Perhaps due to EGR design. I'm just tossing hypothetical musings. The OEM piping looks remarkably free of bend kinks. I have to think cooling the air outside the block of paramount importance. Internal should be good with little to no tweaking (aware of links to improved radiator control specific to Fiero) but anything external fair game for cooling efforts. And hopefully improve overall reliability.

Looks good. The air space between the shield and starter will work just fine.

I second that, it will work perfect. that air gap is more then enough. do not worry about airflow or heat transfer, that is not how heat shields work.
