Heavy 56K warning. Tons of pics.

Seeing as the double DIN form factor is rapidly spreading as a standard on new vehicles and is becoming increasingly popular because of double DIN 7" in dash Navigation units, demand will trickle down to other cars including the Pontiac Fiero.

I finally put in the effort of digging through the archives and found most double DIN Stereo Headunit pictures and installation threads. (pardon the dust ) The archives are a great resource. For this thread I'm defining double DIN as an opening that will fit a off-the-shelf retail, or OEM headunit that conforms to the 2 DIN form factor. Being a good grad student, I cited the original poster (to the best of my knowledge) and the original location of the thread, hoping this will enable people to follow up further on specific installs if interested. (throughout school I was drilled to cite EVERYTHING, guess some of it stuck. )

It was hard to do this, as it's not possible to directly quote threads from the archives, so I had to manually do this. So please PM me to let me know if I mesed up some of the image tags, links, usernames, etc. I'm sure there are tons more double DIN build threads lurking in the archives, or currently in progress that I missed, so PM me please if you know of one.

Happy modding!

I put a Kenwood Double Din MP3 player in my 88GT. The hardest part was building the brackets and making sure it sat straight and in the middle. The DD stereo's face is taller of course, but alos about 1" shorter width wise. It is also longer in depth than the stocker. I'm really glad I did it, though I still need to redo the overlays. I velcro'd the remote to the passenger asstray cover, that makes it much easier to adjust than always having to reach, and having the shifter get in the way. Plus it's more comfortable.

Oddballs:

Custom solution, not quite double DIN, as it's just a LCD faceplate, unfortunately not finished (at least not in that thread)

Another custom solution, not quite double DIN, as it's just a LCD faceplate with a single DIN headunit underneath. Impressive nonetheless.

Not quite double DIN, but I thought this was a cool setup:

Yep that one was mine. Boy, was that a long time ago, I've put in at least put 4 or 5 radios in since then. I used the heater faceplate to hold the radio in. Just made a couple of brackets out of some scrap steel, and screwed it directly to the face plate (after trimming if of course). One minor cut into the skeleton and removal of the original metal bracket behind the radio. Fit great and worked great. Thanks for digging that pic up, I haven't seen that in quite a while. -Jason
