I just purchased a 87 GT with a 350 swap. I'm having a problem with the air cleaner. It had a 6 1/2 cleaner on it when I purchased it, but the filter is shot and I can't find a replacement filter that size. Also I would like to go with a bigger breather. I purchased a 9" that barely cleared the trunk braces, and I thought everything was ok. I took the car for a spin, and when I got back I took a look at the breather and it was bent all to heck. I guess under torque the engine moves enough that the breather unit hits the trunk brace. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions or can tell me what they've done with theirs. The car has a 4 barrell edelbrock. Thanks
Thanks for the reply. I have one of those on one of my other vehicles and tried it on the fiero. I'ts a 14", and I had problems with it being too wide and hitting another part of the trunk lid. I tried to find a smaller diameter, but haven't found any yet. I'm thinking about cutting out part of the trunk brace, and I think that will solve the problem.

With it's original air filter it fit under the stock decklid with no problem. I had to buy a K&N 3.5" X 10" filter element to raise the top of it into my scoop.
When I got my V8 the motor and tranny mounts were shot. I solid mounted the tranny and welded the motor mount to the cradle. No more moving around. I just welded some angle iron to the stock mounts, I do plan on making it look better one of these days but it gets the job done. The front tranny mount takes a lot of beating!

When I bought my 87 Gt 350, the front motor plate was only bolted to the cradle. Every time I got down on the throttle while driving, the air cleaner and stud got bent over. It has Archie's kit, and his instructions are to bolt the engine and cradle assembly together for a trial fit-up in the car, but then to drop it back out to weld the plate to the cradle. Once I welded it (in the car incidentally), the problem went away. Hope this helps you.

I've been using this Holly unit on my sbc car. I'm using an Edelbrock Performer RPM manifold, which is quite high, with no clearance problems. the filter shape allows it to miss the decklid brace. http://store.summitracing.c...+115+320704&D=320704

I use the Edelbrock Pro Flow 1000 (part number 1002 4 barrel carb I assume) It breaths well It clears the trunk lid and archie recomends and uses it. http://www.edelbrock.com/au...s/ac_ss_chrome.shtml its on the bottom of the page.
Here's my setup using Jeep Grand Cherokee parts and a cone filter. I'm not sure about the flow differences, but I know it gets colder air. I tried a few filters on top, but I liked this setup better.

Be careful of these. I originally had one and was told by many of the dangers of using these. Both at car shows and quite a few hot rod forums. The problem is the foam filter can get fuel on it and if the engine gets a backfire thru the carb, the foam filter catches on fire and melts into the carb and sets the top of the engine on fire. The other problem is that the foam dries out and flakes are drawn into the engine over time.
Thanks for the info on the breather. I didn't know. I wonder if archie knows this he recommended the setup based on flow and price. I'm sure he wouldn't use it if he thought it was dangerous.

I'm going to check the engine and tranny mounts before I do anything, but after looking at everyone else's set ups, I'm leaning toward a carb hat with remote filter and plumb it all to the holley side air scoop it has on it already. Thanks for all the input.

I got a chance to look at the motor mounts last night, and found the frame is cracked in three places where the motor mount is welded to it. I was able to get in there with my welder and fixed it temporarily, but it will need reinforced soon. That took care of the engine moving around. I was also able to bend my 9" edelbrock air cleaner close to a circle shape, and it will work for now, although it looks bad. It will have to do, until I can do something different.
