I'm looking for the measurement from bellhousing face to the back(front?) of the trans chain drive cover. I.E. how much it adds to the length of the engine setup. also if someone could measure where the axle centerline is from the bellhousing face...these measurements could come in really handy.

thanks in advance

I checked a couple of autocad drawings I had drawn several years ago when I was into the 425 and had one one the shelf to measure.

Bell housing to end of tranny (chain end) is about 10 1/4'
Bell housing to Axle centerline is about 12 1/4"
End of tranny is about 22.5" behind the axle centerline.

These should be good enough to get started with.

I don't know how much this will help, but the driveshafts run under the lower center of the oil pan (the Olds and Caddy big block motors actually have a special oil pan with a huge notch in the center for the driveshaft). The transmission doesn't stick out much past the rear of the motor. The entire unit (transmission and all) can typically be pulled straight up from an engine bay of an Eldorado or a Toronado. I'd say maybe 8-9"s from the rear of the motor.

Like I mentioned in an earlier thread, seriously consider getting a "Switch Pitch" transmission. They are pretty common in the early Toronado Trafeos and Caddy Eldorados. It'll give you a switch phase torque converter. You'll be able to drive the car normally, and then when you floor it... all hell will break loose and you'll upset the Earth's rotation.

Fieroguru is right on the mark: 10.25" bellhousing flange to aft side of chain cover & 12.25" bellhousing flange to centerline of axle.

My switch pitch tranny has a 12" converter which is 14lb lighter then the 13" option and has been built for more switched stall. A switch pitch hits just a little bit softer at a modified 3500 stall but that makes it better for street racing and saves parts at the track.
