Anyone here use Royal Purple oil? I was thinking of switching to it at my next oil change, along with the Royal Purple transmission fluid.

I've run Mobil1 Synth before but maintained my 3k mile oil change interval, also replacing the filter.

How long can I run Royal Purple before a change? Also, I'm using a K&N oil filter, is there a better filter in terms of longevity?

Any input is appreciated, I work for an auto parts store so the cost is not a big issue, though the increase from my usual Castrol GTX oil change is significant.

I used Royal Purple in my 2002 GTP and it could have went above 5,000 miles. I only changed it because my information center said 0% oil life and it bothered me, but after I looked at it, the oil looked like it had more life in it. I just put some in my Fiero GT, I haven't got the chance to drive it yet because of the ridicous amount of snow here.

For me, one main benefit of using a synthetic oil is prolonging the change interval.....it's just too expensive to change every 3000 miles (heck, most dino oils can go longer than that). I bought a new '04 Civic EX and it called for oil changes at 10,000 miles (5,000 in extreme conditions.....like Colorado!), so at the very least, I would drive 5,000 miles on that Royal Purple and not think twice about it. I imagine 7500-10,000 miles would be fine too.

As far as filters go......I like WIX, more specifically, Napa Gold filters. Stay away from Fram.....they are junk. I think the K&N oil filter is a waste of money....aren't they like $10??

BTW.....I did use Royal Purple exclusively on the Northstar convertible I owned. It took 8 quarts of the stuff, so oil changes were pricey......there was no way I was changing it at 3000 measly miles!! Try the 7500 mile interval and you should be good to go.

I haven't seen a filter with better materials and construction than the K&N ones. Second to those, I would go with Bosch, but they're almost as expensive. Next is Wix. All three are acceptable. I wouldn't use Fram. I hear Purolators are good but I have no peresonal experience with them.

Thanks for all the input! The cost of the filter for me is negligible thanks to my discount, so if the K&N is a decent filter I'll just stick with those. We carry Mobile1 filters as well but not the one for my car.

How is Fram in terms of transmission filters? All we carry are Fram and GKi for tranny filters, and GKi is supposedly junk.

Fram filter are junk no matter what type of filter it is. I have had way to many bad experiences with Fram filters and wouldn't reccommend them to anyone. K&N does make a good oil filter, I have that on my Fiero GT and I have had it on other cars as well. I like the one inch nut on it, it makes it alot easier to install in tight spaces. Get a Wix (NAPA) or a AC Delco one, Rockauto sells both.

I've been using Mobil 1, and going with the 10k interval. the drained oil still looks & feels great. and, yes - use a good filter. I like the Bosch & Purolator PureOne. I have also used the Mobil 1 filter. Purolator PureOne is my favorite. cost being the reason - cant tell a difference. I also use the larger size filetr, instead of that stubby little thing which is recommended. 24011 is the purolator part No. other reason I like it - I remember the number I think is a 4.3 astro van which I look up.

Here's a bit of filter information that I found while reading the Pontiac Street Performance website. (For my pre-corporate GM engine in the LeMans)

It's a Mopar site but the guy's research is fantastic.

Kendall (Icelander) Whitlatch
'85 Fiero 2M4 - 5spd Isuzu
'67 LeMans/GTO clone 6.5 litre TH400
All the rest aren't Pontiacs, so what does it matter?

Try this site for oil/filter info:

http://www.bobistheoilguy.c...orums/ubbthreads.php

RP should easily go 10K and probably more if you do oil analysis. I run Penzoil Platinum at a once per year change. That's around 10K for my most used vehicle.

At this point the filter site that Icelander posted is pretty old. However you get the idea and you can usually figure out who made the filter by looking at the base plate and what you can see down the central hole. Bob's has updated info on who made what filter and there are peeps who are constantly cutting them open, so you get a lot of feedback. The big thing about Bobs is you get the myth of changing oil every 3K knocked out of your head. See also the Consumer Reports study at the following link. Oil has improved since that study was done in 1996, so going 6K on Dino should be a no-brainer at this point. The real advantage of synthetic is long oil changes, otherwise Dino works well for shorter oil change intervals.
