Anyone have 255/45/17 tires on the rear of their Fiero? Just looking for pics on how the tire size looks in the wheel well. I'm using 255/40/17s right now but I'm getting new rims that aren't wide enough for those (255/40 requires 8.5" wide minimum, and my new rims will be 8"); I need to go to a higher profile or else use 245s (which I'd rather not do). The 255/40/17 tire is 25" diameter, 255/40/17 is 26" diameter.

255/40/17 on the rear:

I run 255/40R17s on a 17x8 with no problems. They look and behave fine. See sig pic.

I needed a 26" tall tire to keep the Olds speedo correct. Here is mine 255/45/17 8" wide rim 35mm offset on rear.

This pic is lowered about half an inch, I like the rear a little higher than the front

The next pics are stock springs in the rear. The front is lowered about 2 inches.

Thanks for the info Rick and Matt. I will swap over my 255/40/17s from my current wheels and see how well they work since Matt is running that size fine. If the sidewall squirms too much or the contact patch isn't flat I'll go to 255/45/17 since they do look pretty good still.

What tires are you running?
It looks like some brands list that its okay to use their 255/40s with 8" wide rims. Different sidewalls I guess?

Exactly what I have been wondering. Thanks for posting the question and answers guys.

I decided to go with the 245/45-17 for mine since I will be running 8" and there are more tire choices for that size. This does give me a good look at what the 17's with a 45 series look like. Thanks again.

EDIT: Are those ASA AR1's I see on your fiero Rickady? I was looking at the black for mine. Did you go wth the 17x7 +38mm on the front or 8" all around?

Yes. The fronts are 17x7x38mm 215 45 17
Lowered 2"+ way to low for me so I changed out the springs and lifte it up about an inch for this pic.

Interesting.. they're incredibly inexpensive. 3 lbs lighter than what I have now, too. Maybe I'll give those a try next. How many miles do you have on yours?

It's amazing how good and up to date these cars look with a nice paint job and a good set of wheels.

Thats perfect! I'm also somewhere over a 2" drop. Now I know how everything looks on a fiero. I'm going with a 225/45-17 front and 245/45-17 rear. With these sizes there are about 80 tires to choose from through tirerack.com. I appreciate the info. Thanks Rickady.

I get about 15 to 20k miles out of the rear tires and 25k out of the front.

Does this wheel/tire combination require any suspension mods to work properly?

Front: 17x7 with 215/45/17 tires
Rear: 17x8 with 255/45/17 tires

I am buying an 86GT this week that needs tires, figure I might as well buy nicer rims while I'm at it....thanks in advance!

Steve I ran them for a short bit on my 88 DOHC GT the sidewall flexed a bit too much, looked too fat ( sidewall wise) but pehaps another brand might have stiifer sidewalls..
Mine were 255/45/17 Riken Raptors ..Very good tire in a 245/45/17 and not very enxpensive
