I'm a new Fiero owner. I have a 1988 Fiero GT "Rolling Thunder" and I live in Texas. Unfortunately, Texas requires a front license plate. Even worse, the plate covers the two fog lights (I don't know if they are stock) that I think look pretty cool. I really don't want to stick it in the windshield and I was wondering if anyone has seen a different way of mounting a license plate.
I was thinking of mounting it to hang down from behind the bumper. The bumper is pretty high off the ground.
Rolling Thunder - WELCOME to the forum! I am like you and have an 88GT that has no plate holder. I have the plate in the windshield on the passenger side and it doesn't bother me at all. I have had no trouble with being pulled over for it (knock on wood) and I am sure that you will agree that there are a ton of Vettes and other cars out there that do not have the front holder with a plate in it and also no plate even in the windshield.
Now, I don't know if you are an Aggie or not, but you may have a bit more trouble from the PD if you are younger (I have been out of college for a looooooooong time). My son has an 87GT and it does have the front plate and fog lights (not stock - no Fiero came with stock fog lights) and I will post some pics of it when I get the chance. I think that the lights to the side of the plate look very very nice. You may want to (as suggested above) simply move the lights off to the side. The hardest part may be to find a front bracket.
I am always prepared to be pulled over by simply saying that the car was bought out of state where the front plate was not needed and that b/c the car is 20 years old it is hard to find the plate bracket. I carry around the paperwork showing that it was bought out of state.
The local PD and Sheriff's Dept officers all know me and don't bother with me. The Waco PD pretty much knows me and don't bother me either...but I am always prepared when I go out of my "area". In fact, I was in CS just a few weeks ago with the car and wasn't bothered by the 4 local PD cruisers that I saw there (including the one I parked next to).

Thanks guys. I didn't know if the lights were stock, but their rectangular shape looks really good. With the paint faded to flat black, it almost looks like something out of Mad Max.
I may go with that retractable plate mount. It's only $20 more than the stocker from the Fiero Store.
As far as light relocation goes, I do some fabrication, I have access to machine shops, and I know a guy who is a professional fabricator. I think I'm set.

Welcome. CenTex is luckier than most.
I was pulled over for no front plate within a month of moving to Texas from Florida. I have subsequently been pulled over so many times for no reason I've lost count, (including Waco PD) so I keep it street legal. If you come up with a way to mount the plate that also looks good let me know.

Live in the Katy Texas area, last October I got pulled over and given a ticket for no FRONT lience plate. $175.00. Was near town, driving posted speed. Just lucky I guess.
I got stopped in NE for not having a front plate on my 88GT. Had a bracket but didn't want to put it on and mess up the paint so made mounts from the subframe instead so it does not touch the body.
Got stopped in my 85Gt a couple weeks ago so now it has a front plate with the stock mount. Will change it also when I repaint the car.

I don't really understand your concern...the license plate bracket for the aero nose actually doesn't touch the paint except for the small little wedge section in the vent. You could put a small piece of clear tape on there and it wouldn't be harmed at all.
If only.... The new 88GT has stuff I am having to work on a lot...I miss the Indy now, knowing I never had much to do on it other than routine maintenance....(except now it seems that it has developed a problem for Don which I feel terrible about).
AH HAH!!!! There are actually. It was a very rare option that didn't make it onto more than 1 or 2 cars. I was reading several articles, and the last few Fieros that rolled off the assembly line in 1988, a couple of them had factory installed fog lights. Basically, I guess they were cleaning out the bins and trying to totally load up the last few Fieros. The fog lamp switch took the place of like the rear defog or something...
Is it possible I have an extremely rare Fiero or that a previous owner installed them? Take a look at the picture I posted. It might reveal the truth. Any specific way to tell if I have one?
Edit: I know they are over 10 years old. This car sat for a while.

Here it is with the license plate To remove it, I push in (it's spring loaded) and turn it Then I just put the Fiero badge over the female part of the mount in the grill, and it's ready to show

Early 90's small GM pickups (S-10 and Sonoma) had fog lights mounted in the air dam. The whole setup looks like an aftermarket add on. Maybe those could mount in the Fiero air dam?

Can you post more info on how you made that mount for the plate. I would like to make one like that.

I like what you did there. It gave me the idea that maybe I should consider mounting it just below the stock location. So it is underneath the fog lights, but in front of the bumper. It should also have decent ground clearance. I can definitely fabricate a mount for that.
