The last couple of days we've been working on the underside of the car.
We put the A/C lines, Heater pipes, battery cables & P.S. lines along either side of the newly painted gas tank.
Then we put the car on the floor to slightly modify the rear clip to make it easier to remove.
Also put a new double wall floor in the trunk area.
With the engine out of the car, we're working on the McChuck project.
We're also moving & lowering the location where the wire harness passes thru the bulkhead, so the wires will be out of the way as much as we can have them.
To make clearance for the lines running to the P.S. pump, we had to make a slight bubble to the forward bulkhead.
Right now the schedule has us returning this car to Mark next Monday to finish the paint job.

Arch, Have you ever used a LS4 Harmonic Balancer on the LS1 motor. If you did it could free up some room and you may not need to "notch" the frame. Have you ever given it a try? If you did, what happened? The reason I ask is that the stock LS1 pully is so large, and you never even use the inside set of grooves. I noticed the LS4 only has the one set of pully grooves so it is only half the size of the stock LS1 one. Just thinking ahead for my swap.

You should have the part by Monday. Just a thought we could also eyeball what the part would look like under the splitter. If someone could photo shop this it would be greatly appreciated.

That tank looks great in there. As more little things like that are installed the effect of the color really shows. The grillwork will really help set off the color with a bit of contrast and give some definition to the openings in the car. The car will have just the right amount of accent color to set off the paint.....even the underside of the car.
I'm still up in the Northwoods of Wisconsin and sitting in the truck in Bayfield, Wisconsin. It's a small resort town right on the shore of Lake Superior and it's really pretty here, but Kristie is out doing a little shopping and I've had enough of that today, so I found a nice quiet place to park in the shade and hooked up to a free wi-fi sight. Tourists.....now with laptops!
Anyway, back to vacation.

Rob started building the sheet metal panels for the engine compartment today.
There is a small "U" channel down at the bottom to hold the panel & some ST Sheel metal screws at the top edge to hold it in place.
You can also see that he built a box around the hinge box on the drivers side.
Having a Sheet Metal Brake & a Plasma Cutter are really handy sometimes.
This is just the beginning on making these parts. We will still need to put some holes into them when we route the route the Shift cables, ECM wires, hoses etc. This is why we lowered the openings where the harness will pass thru the bulkhead. We will be trying to hide as much of the wires, hoses & cables behind the covers as we can. However this will not be 100% complete until final assembly when we can mount the engine for the last time & hook everything up.
When finished, these will be painted to match the rest of the engine compartment.
Then we put the engine assembly back into the car to check for fit on the shield & to start figuring out where to mount the Electric W/P, P.S. tank, CAI, Oil Tank & several other things. Later panels will be built to the other exposed side panels.
The P.S. pump comes close to the bulkhead, so the shield will have to work it's way around that area.
The CAI, Oil Tank, Shift Cables & any number of wires have to occupy this corner.
We also worked on midifying the dash today to allow mounting of those nice Cup Holders.
Kris came up with a good way to mount them. Then modified the bottom edge of the dash & fiberglassed it all from the inside. Here he's filling & sanding the new face of the dash.

Troy, The car is looking absolutley amazing! I love that engine and it looks like the engine bay is going to be nice display case for it. When do you think you will have the car home? I am coming in for a couple of days to catch a Yankees game before they tear down the stadium, but you probably won't have it home by mid September

For the light beams to be pointed straight down the road, the edges indicated by arrows need to be pointed forward on the car.
We think that the top part of the light (covered in cardboard) is an area that is covered up by the hood or other bodywork in the light's original application.
More pics in a few minutes...

We're thinking the the area of the light assembly that is covered with the cardboard above, is going to have to be mounted up into the top wall of the top scoop area. (see arrow)
For the lenses to be pointed in the right direction the lights will have to be mounted in deeper on the outside end & shallow on the inboard end.
More pics
Enjoy

Also today we worked out the positioning of the oil tank & are almost done with the mounting brackets.
We wrapped the tank in plastic wrap to prevent scratches.
It just barely fits in there. If the tank was a half inch larger in diameter, it wouldn't fit. Between the frame rail, transmission case & the forward bulkhead, you couldn't move the tank a quarter inch in any direction without hitting something.
mount the light for the best fit to the front end, they are more of a daytime/ accent light, so if the light is not pointing perfectly straight it's ok they are not fog or driving lights. pics:
in the pics the lights are mounted for best fit to the VW nose, they are not perfectly straight like the Audi but still look good IMO.
we will use these to light up the road

Curious what you are doing for an intake with the oil tank there...? enough room for a 4" (<- assuming the TB size?) pipe to go in the fender? Hard to tell how much room is there from those angles.

That's what we're working on now. The shift cables, CAI & oil tank all have to get along & share that little bit of space.
