I was driving my friend home last night. As I was accelerating from a stop sign, i attempted to shift into second. Halfway through the shift, the shifter got really loose and didn't work. Immediately I figured the shift cable had become disconnected from the shifter arm on the transaxle. I stopped, shoved the arm into second and drove home in second. I attached the cable with some zip ties, which works pretty good but I'm not gonna drive to Colorado this summer with zip ties holding my shift cable on. I found that the actual ball joint part broke, the ball came out of the yellow socket thing. I wanna replace the end so I dont have to buy new cables, is that possible? what are my options? My zip tie job:

if you are saying that the plastic end of the cable will no longer stay on the ball stud , here is an easy fix :drape some cellophane on the ball stud .clean the inside of the plastic cable end and fill with some good quality epoxy .push plastic end back on to ball stud .let epoxy harden and drive on .i have done this three times and it works like a charm .

I have used rodneys kit for the shift ball socket repair ,, it works Good . To make install of kit into socket easier ,,use a piece of 2X4 to scoop out a receptacle hole to drill the thru the plastic,, this is simple to do you can scoop or chisel a mold that holds the plastic piece that you will drill thru to insert repair unit ,, when you see the part and read the instructions you will understan ,, the 2X4 jig/mold will assure you do not destroy old plastic piece.. Rodney,s kit works,, it is simple,,it is cheap compared to a new cable. spray some brake cleaner in cable to clean it out ,, then lube and it will work freely . He is an advertiser on this forum and you will probably find other goodies on his site you may wish for !!

I have a brand new, never used Rodney Dickman shift cable for the 282 5 speed Getrag. I am willing to let it go for $100 shipped. PM me if you are interested.

i meant to say i have done it on three different cable ends and have not had a failure .i even used this method on my eco swap to adapt a large stud cable end to a small stud .the only drawback to my system is that the cable will no longer come off the stud .this does not matter to me because the stud can still be unbolted .

I ended up doing the same thing. zip ties. worked well - but doesnt look the best. Rodneys kit works too - but I was alwasy scared I would break the plastic with a agressive shift.
at one point, I thought about building up the plastic with epoxy.
If worried about breakage use the small kit ,,if you use the method I describe above you should have no problem,,you just make a space in the 2X4 to hold the plastic piece firmly it does not take 5 minutes to make the jig,,just a hole the shape of the piece to be drilled..it holds the plastic piece very firm.. you drill right thru the plastic piece into the wood.. I removed cable but it can be done with out removing cable,,because the small section of 2x4 will hold it firm.. I prefer to remove cable so I can hang it and run brake fluid thru it,, then a lube bree cant,,I dry the exposed ends to prevent dirt accumulation sorry I can not post photo
