The specs for this tire size on the Tire Rack site indicate a recommended rim width of 7.5-9.0 inches. My rims are 7 inches wide, and according to the site I shouldn't run any larger than a 225/45/17 (or a 235/50/17, but that makes the overall diameter a full inch larger). I'd really like that extra bit of width.
Any experiences with this?

I run 235/45R17 Kumhos on the back of my 86 GT, on 7 inch wide Konig Monsoon rims. I've noticed NO unusual wear on the tread due to the tires being mounted on 7 inch rims. If I had been able to order a wider rim at the time, I would have, but I have no qualms about running that size tire on that rim.

As mentioned above, 235 should work. It probably won't be optimal for handling, though. But if you don't autocross or road race, it probably won't be an issue.

I just drive on the street and occassionally take some curves a little too fast...Sounds like I should be fine as long as the tire shop doesn't argue with me.

Car still being prepped for paint, but you can sorta see the sidewalls dont "buldge" at all, I dont think 235's will be bad either.
Nice! Thanks for the good pics!

I went out to my storage unit to start the car and let it run for a while, and took a better picture while I was there. The colors are lousy, as it's just a camera phone pic, but it will give you a better idea of what the sidewall looks like in relationship to the wheel. As far as handling goes, I ran the car at Heartland Park during the Wheatstock open track day, and I had no handling problems whatsoever.

THANKS AGAIN!
The tire shop said they'll install them on a 7 inch rim if I want them installed. His books say 7.5-9.0 inch with 8.0 inch as the optimum for a 235/45/17. A 235/50/17 is good on a 7 inch rim according to the book- but that's about a full inch larger overall diameter than stock.

Any noticeable center wear on the tire tread? The tire shop said that's the only thing I might worry about with the 235/45/17 on a 7 inch rim due to the pinching in at the bead and doming of the tread that MIGHT occur...

No, the tire seems to be wearing fairly evenly over the width of the tread. You definitely do not want to overinflate the tires, as that will exaggerate the "doming" that the tire shop told you about. I run 30 PSI in all of my tires, and that seems to work about right. As you can see from the picture, there isn't a lot of pinching at the bead on mine. Best thing to do would be to have one tire mounted on a wheel, then see if you want to proceed or not. Most good tire shops will do that for you, so that you can see exactly what your situation looks like.

when i get around to saving the money and buying the tires, i want to get 225/45/17 up front (maybe 235's) and 255/45/17 in back. anyone see any issues with these?
